Help! Abe Darby is totally drooping--even new growth.

Hi everyone, wow I am a basket of problems. This is my Abraham Darby that I posted about with weird petal issues, thinking ear wigs or Thrips. Anyway, I get home today, go out, and boom--almost all of the canes are totally drooping towards the ground. They feel flimsy and floppy. Even new growth is drooping. See those flowers? They look like they have Thrip damage too. Please tell me this is not cane borers....

Any ideas?

The reason the rose stems are drooping is from lack of water pressure in the cells. Your plant is losing water though evaporation faster than the roots can replenished it. The probably means that you need to water more often. When it is hot and not raining, I sometimes need to water every day. It can get so hot that the roots can not take up the water fast enough to keep the plant hydrated, if this is the problem it will recover as the sun goes down and temperatures cool. It this becomes a daily occurrence, then you might need to provide some midday shade.

^We had like three days of flash flooding so I didn't water since Saturday....I am sure that is why. Seems so simple, but my mind jumped to the worst. Just watered...thank you!!!!!!!!

I know this post is older, but for those reading for the first time... Here are my 2 cents. I have a few austins some do okay, sister Elizabeth thrives, but Abraham Darby is a complete flop! I doesn't grow, it dies back every winter to the ground (zone 5), the buds don't open, it has blackspot and rust. I have been waiting 5 years hoping for this rose to perform and have only seen maybe 2 bloom ever on a leafless twig. I have other roses surrounding it that thrive! I would suggest the rose "quietness" as an alternative. Huge, blush colored blooms (not as peachy as Abraham Darby) that smell fantastic. This rose grows tall, has little winter die back and (sitting right next to Abraham d.) has no disease...ever! Quietness

I don’t think I have cucumber bettles. I have a feeling it’s thrips. Do you use the cups, Vap? I’ve been lax about the oil coated cups and gloves lately. I’d better get them set up again. There’s always something after the roses, isn’t there? I currently have a gopher on an absolute rampage! My very oldest roses are not planted in cages. I’m afraid to water the roses that aren’t in cages, because they seem to be attracted to freshly watered plants. The problem is, it’s been in the 90’s here with less than 20% humility, and wind that sucks the moisture right out of everything in no time. I’m taking turns watering the cageless roses and setting my sonic gopher beeper/vibrators next to the ones that I’ve just watered. I only have two of those gadgets. How are the soil conditions in that spot? Is it getting enough water? Too much? Did you fertilize (which may have burned the roots)? I find that Abe is quite a tough rose. If it were me, I'd check the moisture content of the soil under the mulch, because mine looked a bit like that when I didn't realize the drip had failed around them (and the other roses were okay). I would also consider digging it up and putting it in a pampered pot for a while. As a new plant, the roots are probably still pretty compact. I have two Abes from DA (and 3 from cuttings), all own root, and had no problems with them other than the inadequate water situation.

@dave5bWY - Thanks, he's about as perfect as a rose can be, quirky nature and all. @Gardengal - I've grown him in a 20" pot and he did well, but he didn't grow as big as in the ground. @oursteelers - thanks! @Heather RR - Good luck! We don't have blackspot or rust here, but I hear those can affect Abe. With your moisture, he will probably do even better for you than for me! @erasmus_gw - Your Abe is so gorgeous! Yours seems to be more pink. Funny how Abe does that. @Melissa Kansas - Try him, and let us know how he does! My "soil" (sand, really) isn't quite that alkaline. My Abe seems to love chicken byproduct fertilizer, Jobe's Organic and DA rose food in particular. The other brands, not as much (even though they were also chicken byproduct), and not so much with other fertilizers. He turned his nose up at fish emulsion, and he didn't care for alfalfa pellets or MiracleGro fertilizer.

A lot of DA's roses are water hogs. My Graham Thomas is always wilting like that. It should perk up soon.

Another good reason to include your location as well as your zone. We are in the middle of daily thunderstorms with high humidity. Nothing dries out in this weather.
