How big are single aster flowers usually? Like how many inches RO
Comments (2)I see no difference between the ease of growing the single vs the double.....except that the single don't break in a heavy rain... The singles I have grown are the same size as the double,,,,but single....about 2 1/2 inches across. If you let the double ones reseed they will turn out to be single in subsequent years. Comments (8)I'm going to guess it's your soil which you should have tested (see below). Not only a nutrient problem but a soil tilth issue as well. Check with your state's Extension Service. Each county should have it's own Cooperative Extension Office which provides free publications and information for the asking. They will have valuable vegetable/gardening tables available specifically for your area determined by universities and horticultural research scientists who have collected data from growing those crops in your state. Your tax dollars are already paying for this service so you may as well get some use out of it. My suggestion to you silverwind is to get your soil tested. Your Extension Service can provide you with soil testing information. Mine was only $9.00, less than the cost of some strictly pH tests, and far more thorough. No guessing at what might need to be added, no money wasted. See how detailed these examples are: Vegetable Planting and Planning Calendar for Missouri (download the pdf) complete with spring and fall planting dates (underneath the spring planting dates for appropriate crops), how much to plant per person, etc. They can also tell you the average last frost date for your area and ideal planting times for specific crops and varieties in your area. Here is an excerpt: Next time try a 1x1 or 2x2 raised bed with light, fully, professional growing mix instead of your existing soil. Comments (9)I came across this recipe for pickled radishes on the BHG site. Sweet Riesling Pickled Radishes Ingredients 2 pounds radishes 2 1/2 cups water 2 tablespoons kosher salt 1 3/4 cups Riesling or other white wine 1 cup white wine vinegar 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons whole multicolor peppercorns 10 whole cloves 1/2 teaspoon whole allspice Directions 1. Wash radishes; trim off radish tops and roots. Cut radishes into 1/4-inch slices. In a large nonmetal bowl stir together the 2 1/2 cups water and salt; add radishes. Cover and chill for 1 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Pour radish mixture into a colander set in a sink. Rinse with cold water; drain. 2. In a medium stainless-steel, enamel, or nonstick heavy saucepan combine wine, vinegar, sugar, peppercorns, cloves, and allspice. Bring to boiling, stirring to dissolve sugar; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 15 minutes. 3. Pack radishes into hot sterilized half-pint canning jars, leaving a 1/4-inch headspace. Pour hot vinegar mixture over radishes, distributing the whole spices evenly and maintaining the 1/4-inch headspace. Wipe jar rims; adjust lids and screw bands. 4. Process filled jars in a boiling-water canner for 10 minutes (start timing when water returns to boiling). Remove jars from canner; cool on wire racks. Makes 5 half-pints. There were no reviews for the recipe but the brine sounded pretty good to me :-)...See MoreHow Many Like to Drink Buttermilk!
Comments (35)My dad thought milk was the perfect food. It is....for calves. He was very upset because I wouldn't drink it. We had a milk cow and they ended up selling her because we couldn't use all the milk she produced. (Plus I think my mother was tired of milking.). After that we got milk from the milkman. He came early in the morning and he came inside and put the milk in the refrigerator. He didn't knock.... just said "Milk Man" as he came in the door. I am sure my dad was lactose intolerant. He drank so much milk and he always had stomach trouble. He lived on Tums. I agree with Glenda, buttermilk pie is the best....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
