And wanted
to introduce our new family member from the local pound, Miss Betty. We lost our old, beloved German Shepherd in
March to hip dysplasia. He had been with
us since showing up as a stray six years earlier. DS moved with his Golden this
summer, and DD took our cat with her to college last year. So it was down to just me, my DH and Max, our
border collie rescue we adopted 10 years ago.
We needed a dog, and Miss Betty needed a home. We adopted her from the pound on 6/29. They picked her up as a stray a couple of
weeks earlier. Sadly, a new mom still
with milk, but per the shelter, her puppies did not survive. She came with the typical stray dog ailments;
bad case of kennel cough, worms, infected incision from shelter spaying, very
underweight, scars and a permanent limp from an old, unknown injury, etc. She’s been quite the trooper considering all
of that. She’s healing and getting
stronger and spunkier every day, and we are so happy to have this sweet hound
mix with us now.

Well, I meant to post this on the antique forum, since I didn't include pictures of any moderns in the post, but somehow it ended up on the rose forum...but then it disappeared, so I reposted on antique forum...then it was on rose forum twice and antique forum once for some reason...then it disappeared from all places...then it reappeared and seems to be everywhere now...lol...so sorry for all the duplicates

Pat your roses all look great. The Queen of the show is Miss Betty. She looks overjoyed to be with your family. These second chance animals turn out to be wonderful pets. Bless you! Lisa

Miss Betty has had a sad life, but I think she knows that's all changed. Thank you for your kindness and love.

Once again I'm convinced that rain and a good helping of humidity make for the best roses, even with all the negatives you've had to contend with. Caldwell Pink and Sweet Pea are adorable. All your roses are beautiful.

and still able to go a mile daily…that’s wonderful! We believe Bowser was around 12 when
euthanasia became necessary this spring.
We miss him terribly, but Miss Betty is now helping to mend all our
hearts. I think even our grumpy old border
collie, Max, likes her, although he won’t yet admit it. He adored Bowser, but was not at all fond of
my son’s overly energetic Golden…he’s very glad Bella, the Golden, is just an occasional visitor
now. I think he & Miss Betty will be best of
friends soon. She is such a sweetheart!

And Ingrid,
as much as I hate the beetles and blackspot, I do think I prefer them over your
drought and excessive heat. When I was out trying to garden this weekend with
beetles swarming everywhere and all in my hair and with temps in the 90’s and
humidity also in the 90% range, I may have said otherwise, though…lol

Pat, your roses look great! It's hard to believe that your garden is in the summer doldrums. What a cutie Miss Betty is! I hope we'll see more of her.

Beautiful roses, but, I agree - Miss Betty steals the show. She looks so sweet and happy.

Thanks for the wonderful photos esp. Maman Cochet, I haven't planted her in either of the public gardens I work in because of the balling issue but I would like to try her-- at home!

My most recent addition at home is G. Nabonnand which is amazingly prolific. He is planning to outgrow his space so Comtesse du Cayla is going to go elsewhere..

Pat, what teas have you had that were really set back by cold winters?? I am right on the northernmost edge of 8A so we get a lot of "zone 7" type winters..!

passive with grumpy Max unless my son’s crazy Golden, Bella, is visiting…which
she is for the next couple of days, so the girls are home burning energy today,

I thought of you last night when I came in from watering pots and found two
beetles still in my hair…lol

Barbara,
Maman Cochet has such beautiful flowers here from midseason on, but early season is
hit or miss with her on balling. She blackspots a good bit here, too, but her bs resistance might be better if Felicia weren’t behind and Maggie beside her…two of my worst OGRs for bs (except for my HPs). I wouldn’t plant her in a public garden needing a low maintenance rose in a humid climate, but I think she’s worth it for a home garden. Rosette Delizy & Duchesse de Brabant are my most cold sensitive teas. I hear Marechal Niel is, as well, but only third year with it and no cold damage issues so far (but a definite baller here).
Most of my others haven’t had too much problem with winter dieback even
during those two polar vortexes. I don’t have G. Nabonnand, but may add that one to my wish list :)
