Informed means numbers. If a protector does effective protection, then each recommendation cites manufacturer spec numbers. None were provided for one damning reason. Nothing adjacent to an appliance claims effective protection. Appliances (ie your TV) contain serious protection. Your concern is hundreds of thousands of joules that might overwhelm that protection. How do hundreds of joules inside a power strip make hundreds of thousands of joules magically disappear? Simple. Advertising. Many who ignore and never demand numbers will simply recommend what advertising says. View numbers for a UPS. Near zero joules. Just enough above zero so that advertising can claim 100% protection. Where is that UPS spec number for protection? Myths are easily believed because most ignore numbers. Your concern is a rare surge, maybe once every seven years, that can damage many appliances - not just a TV. A well proven solution costs about $1 per protected appliance. Is sufficiently sized to even make direct lightning strikes irrelevant. Any facility that cannot suffer damage earths a 'whole house' protector. Homeowners obtain the same well proven solution from more responsible companies including Siemens, Intermatic, General Electric, Leviton, ABB, or Square D. A Cutler-Hammer solution sells in Lowes and Home Depot for less than $50. Facilities that must never suffer damage waste no money on plug-in protectors. Well proven solution mean hundreds of thousands of joules dissipate harmlessly outside. Therefore protection inside every appliance is not overwhelmed. Hundreds of thousands of joules are harmlessly absorbed in earth. Or somehow that energy magically disappears? An effective protector remains functional after every surge (including direct lightning strikes). Just a few reasons why reliable facilities spend tens or 100 times less money to earth a well proven solution. Unplugging is not a reliable solution for a long list of reasons. First, a most unreliable solution means human intervention. Second, even early 20th Century ham radio operators disconnected their antennas, put the lead inside a mason jar, and still suffered damage. Damage stopped only when the antenna lead was earthed. That is the only reliable solution used everywhere that damage cannot happen. Your telco's computer is connected to overhead wires all over town. Same reason why informed homeowners upgrade earthing for that one protector - and use computers routinely during every thunderstorm. Hi. I did some research on whole house surge protection and most if not all the manufactor's still reccomended using surge protectors on all your exspensive appliances.Computers, tv's,Washer,refrigerator's ect. The way I took it is a whole house surge protector would only knock surge down to about 1200 volts still enough surge to cause problems. then the single units would handle the rest of the surge a lot easier. I have a kenmore he4t front loader with the computer board. I have a woods surge protector on the unit rated @ 810 joules of protection.I was told to make sure it has at least 800 joules of protection and is a (l-n)- (l-g)- (n-g) line to neutral, line to ground,neutral to ground protection. For $10.00 that may save your $200.00 - $600.00 I thought it was worth it.Surge protector will not go off during washer use. Craig

It will somewhat lengthen the duration of the surge. But the fact remains that with a 10,000A surge on the incoming power wire the maximum energy absorption at a plug-in protector was 35 joules. The maximum was not even for the largest surges. The largest surges forced the voltage at the service above 6kV and arc-over. For some smaller surges (with the shortest branch circuits) the MOVat the protector held the voltage at the panel below 6kV and there was no arc-over. One of them resulted in the maximum energy of 35 joules. The voltage at the panel was higher than the stable arc-over voltage but lower than 6kV. ==========
