Morning, Afternoon or All Day?

6 years agoI'm in a very different zone from yours but will share my experience. Our temps are 90-100 and arid mostly during the summer.
My echeverias prefer morning sun only. Here's what happened to an echie in the ground in full sun last summer. It's curling up to protect itself from too much sun.
I transplanted into a pot, so here it is in the fall, much happier:

Comments (5)I'm not much of a fan of self watering containers. If the water gets hot the plants seam to die really fast. Some people really like them though so it may be just me. Its easier to care for tomatoes in really large containers. The smaller the container the more often you have to water and fertilize. You picked good varieties for containers though so if you watch them really close you may have good success. When I read the reviews on Bush Goliath it made me wish that I had planted some. Comments (2)You haven't said whether there is anything there at present, so I am assuming not. As you are planting in a long narrow strip, you will need some shrubs for the "back bone" of your garden--somethings that will provide some interest while your perennials are growing and before they bloom. I also imagine that this is a side of your home--generally side plantings require some height to offset the long and narrow aspect of the space. A mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs is also desireable so that you continue to have some interest in winter. You don't have to do this all at once, but you should consider purchasing a few shrubs each year. Look for an upright/columnar evergreen, maybe some boxwood, hydranga should do well with this exposure, as long as it is well watered, and will give you blooms as well. There are also some roses that will do ok with this amount of sun. Rose of Sharon (not a rose) is a lovely arching shrub with beautiful blooms; magnolia is another possibility. Comments (2)Hydrangeas do quite well in pots, so long as the pots are of suitable size. They will require more frequent watering than if they were in the ground, but otherwise, hydrangeas can be kept in pots for years. My guess is you'll find that dappled shade or morning sun will give you the best results in your zone, but you are likely to see some drooping during the heat of the day regardless of where you put them. You are definitely on the hotter end of their preferred range, but I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to get beautiful results. Good luck!...See More

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoTotally depends on what plant you have and where you are located on the planet:). You're in northern Ohio so your all day sun I'm assuming is safe as long as they're acclimated of course. The Echeverias you listed should be fine in all day sun as long as they're ready for it. Especially the E. ' Raindrops' looks good when recieving good amounts of sun.
How much light you may give a plant could totally depend on your esthetic too. Do you like them with less color or more? I find I like some of my Agavoides with a little less light. I like when they look green and juicy.
But then other Agavoides look so much better with more sun:). This one could use even more sun.
Generally I like the look of my Echeverias with a little more sunlight.

Enough sunlight:). He starts getting sun at about 2pm.
Then there are some plants no matter what the situation is I would never give all day sun:). So knowing what your plants like and don't like really helps.
Like this Glottiphylum I like with less light. In lower light he gets a jelly green. These guys can take the sun too. As soon as I start giving him more sun his green gets more yellow. Me no likely:).
My Crassula 'Devil's Horns' looks good with all day sun:). Looks like chilis.
What I'm trying to say is it just depends. But if I had to choose one of the three. I would pick morning sun:).

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoIt's rainy again today. It's supposed to rain the better part of the week. I feel like I should move them to the porch where they will at least be partly protected from the rain. I won't be able to repot them until the weekend at the earliest.
My DH was not a careful driver and they rolled over on the way home. The topsy turvy lost a flower stalk and the raindrop suffered a broken leaf (visible at 9 o'clock in the photo). The topsy also appears to be pupping down at the bottom right!
At least I think I have identified them correctly, if not, please speak up!
