owens corning or gaf elk architectural shingles?
Comments (2)I've installed quite a few squares of elk timberlines and what I like about them is, that compared to a three tab shingle, the elks have a better adhesion strip at the leading edge of the shingle that keeps them down in high winds. They are also heavier than three tabs. I cant speak for owens corning architectuals. I dont think you can go by mfgr's claims concerning longevity, in this case 30 years, as it is dependent on location and the weather extremes. The main concern is that you have a reputable installer that will do a competent install concerning underlayments, flashings, as well as the shingles themselves and will warrant their install in writing coinciding with the mfgr's warranty on the shingles....See Moreshingles:gaf camelot v. camelot ii
Comments (2)For years the standard in Architectural Roof Shingles was an asphalt based mat shingle that weighed in at about 300# per square. The fiberglass mat shingles which are prevalent today are going to be lighter due to the fiberglass as oppose to the asphalt mat. The Camelot II will be slightly thinner but should be no real difference in appearance the differnce being in the length of warranty due to the weight. The Camelot II was the standard for many years as their base Architect Shingle product with a 30 yr warranty. I think you would be fine with the Camelot II and they do have a 130 mph wind rating. I would be more concerned that they are installed by a competent roofer!...See MoreGAF charcoal shingles and metal combo??
Comments (3)We are doing the same - GAF Timberline HD in Charcoal with black standing seam metal on the porches and roof/cornice returns. I recommend you open up one of the shingle bundles and pull a few of them out to get a feel for how it really looks. Our actual shingles have much more gray in them which is what we wanted. The demo piece on display in the store was completely black and not indicative of the actual product at all. Seeing the actual shingles will help you better pick that metal....See MoreShingle Comparison - Certainteed Landmark Pro vs GAF Timberline HD
Comments (7)Triple layer would be a thicker, heavier shingle and carry a higher cost as well as typically a longer warranty. At the end of the day all the major players quality wise are the same. Different roofers prefer one brand over another for their own reasons, maybe they like working with one shingle over another for perceived benefits, maybe they like a supplier better or they buy at a better price point. Both Certainteed and GAF are definitely considered major players and I would not be afraid to use either one....See Moreiamflowerdot
