Countertop & tub surround -- marble v. Cambria
Comments (3)Don't know if you've considered this, but we broke our vanities up with a make up drawer dropped down between them. The vanities are counter height. Because there are three separate tops, we were able to use the center section cut out from our undermount tub and were able to get everything from one slab. There were extra costs for the edges on the sides of the counter, but it was less than purchasing a second slab. Another fabricator had also recommended that we do pieces around the tub in four sections seamed together. Does that make sense? This way they could easily get everything from one slab. He insisted it had to be done this way or it would crack during transport. The fabricator we ultimately chose reinforced the edges and was able to transport it without any problems. I was really annoyed he tried to convince us it had to be done this way, but it might be an option to consider if you really want the marble and need to get everything from one slab. Unfortunately, the painters are in the bathroom today and tomorrow so I can't get any pictures to better explain myself....See MoreShims to level marble vanity top, ok?
Comments (3)bethinnc: The shims should be plastic or composite, not wood, which is dimensionally unstable and compressive. The shims should have been used under the cabinet so the cabinets would be plumb and level. This would provide continuous perimeter support for the stone and precluded the need for molding to cover the now-exposed shims. If the top were shimmed a heavy 1/16" or so, it wouldn't be a big deal, but that cabinet wasn't installed, it was dropped off and screwed in....See MoreDoes such a laminate color exist...faux green marble
Comments (8)They used to make a really cheesy shiny version of green marble, Pompeii Green if I recall, but it was pretty budget motel cheap looking. If you want green laminate, then Wilsonart's Green Soapstone, Willowstone, or Bottleglass, or Formica's Olivine River (180FX) Uba Tuba or Grass are the best looking of the lot, IMHO. The Olivine River looks the most like real stone, but the gloss level and the touch temperature of it aren't even close. If you are looking at laminate to "fool" someone into thinking it's granite, then I think you are barking up the wrong tree. My pick would be Uba Tuba granite tiles with dark grout. You can hardly tell it is tile....See Morejerusalem gold soapstone and grey/ivory marble counters
Comments (4)ugh, that's what i get for trying to communicate when i'm so tired. you are both right, thanks--it's limestone, not soapstone. so, knowing it's delicacy, i would still like to use it somewhere--patina is good in our book. it's the colour thing which has me worried at the moment. thanks....See MoreUser
