Front Portico - metal roof ???

Trying to change the appearance of our traditional / colonial house to a more casual / rustic look.

Building front steps with blue stone, and the builder is recommending a grey metal roof. Would like your opinion regarding metal roof / design recommendations.

We will be replacing front door and shutters, and will be repainting. Plan to use batten/board shutters.

No way will you ever change the identity of that home. It's a losing battle. And you're wasting your money to even try.

Changes like this should be well thought out and planned -- preferably with the help of a design professional.

It's key that changes and additions appear integrated and not as an afterthought, and enhance, rather than detract from the overall design.

I don't see this porch working with the house.

You might also check the rise going from step to step as the picture seems to show a difference between the middle and top tread.

Thanks all. Sorry for the delayed response. I live in northern Massachusetts, about an hour north of Boston. The portico is about 5 feet wide. I requested a precast concrete step (figured this would be the cheapest) as my foundation is granite they mount them on cement slabs, no footings needed. Attached is the current portico...you'll notice the lovely sloping due to the stairs sinking. (Please excuse the hideous paint color...that is going as soon as I figure out the portico situation.) I requested the rebuild to have two columns with picture frame molding, with an open vaulted ceiling design and a drop light. Now I am thinking perhaps instead of the columns I will do brackets with a curved design to play off the "visors" over the window.

need help with a front door portico

I am remodeling a two story farm house and would like to have a free standing portico over the front door on a 4'x4' thumbprint. There is only 14" between the front door molding and the adjacent window trim and I have wired exterior lighting on either side of the door, therefore no room for support columns. I do have access to the floor rafters for the second story, and was hoping to attach a 6' 4"x4" to the rafter tails (2' attached) and build my portico over that framing. My roof is a 4x12 pitch and was wondering about the ratio for the portico. Thanks for any and all feedback, I will update tomorrow with a picture.

I would have the contractor frame the portico, and sheath it. Then have your roofer put the roof on the house and the portico at the same time. I would want the same guy to responsable for all of the flashing and weaving or however the roof's connect and change planes. Eliminates the old who is responsable for what.

Thanks so much, this is hugely helpful. That glass awning shared is amazing. I will see about talking to a local awning company about it to start. The current awning is actually burgundy, not that it makes it much better :). Definitely agree on the landscaping too and have considered starting with yanking that bush out the blocks the front door, even if we wait on the rest until spring. I never thought about the downspout color being different, and now it stands out like crazy. We’ll definitely have that painted to match the brick. Would you leave the other paint as is? On the door, I also like the idea of having the sides be the same color. What color would you paint it? I wouldn’t mind replacing the door but the side lights are matching to the glass - does that matter? There is also a storm door if that makes a difference. The windows are definitely dated but haven’t been the highest on my priority list to change out - as you can imagine, several things inside look like 1995 too. Thanks so much!

Horrible idea for the roof. Adding anything with a roof needs to match the roof pitch over the garage---and there is not enough room on the front of the house to do that(2d floor window in the way).

Metal roof would be a sore thumb, glaringly out of place.

If the steps/etc. are yours, the rise of each step is off(as PPF pointed out). That is a safety issue as well as not code compliant.

I agree with HandyMac. Maybe if you wanted to fork out a lot of money you could do a copper roof, but metal wouldn't go with the style of the home at all, let alone the rest of the roofing.
