Your bedroom, your bed. Who cares what some random man thinks of it? Though if you do choose to share a space permanently with another person, you will have to make aesthetic compromises. And that bed will likely be one of them.

So, leaving aside the potential occupants of your bed... the bed is ornate and very feminine. It's also very large for the space it's in. Calm-coloured bedding with minimal pattern is the way to go. Crisp white sheets and a oyster-coloured damask duvet would be the direction I would go in. If you're a pillow person, then a couple large matching damask pillow cases and maybe 1 or 2 small brightly coloured accent pillows or a brightly coloured bolster.

Bedside tables should be tall enough to be almost level with the top of the mattress. White or soft grey would be reasonable colours.

The main reason your room feels dark is because the walls are dark. Consider painting them a soft grey about 2 or 3 shades lighter than what's currently there. Buy your bedding and curtains before you buy your paint. Then buy paint that will tie everything together. Textiles come in limited colours but paint is infinitely variable.
