I can answer one. My recessed lights are adjustable so you can vary how deep the bulb goes into them. I would look for that feature so that you can adjust them to the depth you like. I went to a lighting store and discussed which recessed lights I wanted based on what types of bulbs I wanted to use and what I wanted the lights to do. I wanted cans that would accommodate fluorescents if I chose, but not be limited to them, that would provide additional task lighting, and ambient lighting, which meant a dimmer, and therefore a dimmer compatible with fluorescents, but that could also be used with non fluorscent bulbs. They steered me away from the really small ones because those they said are not for task lighting but really just for ambiance, they don't give adequate lighting for task lighting. YOU decide what you are looking for and then they will show you the options. Do you want to be able to use fluorescents? If so, you need to limit your choices to those who will fit them. If not, that is not an issue. If you want task lighting you really need to go with at least 4 and up to 5" cans. Most people have gotten away from really large ones, like the 6". Then you need to look at trim kits available from the lights that meet your requirements, and that may vary from store to store depending on which brands they carry. You should buy the trims with the cans. They need to match. If you also want to use them for ambience you need to consider a dimmer, and if you get cans compatible with fluorescents, you should make sure they check and give you a dimmer compatible them, also. Again, if you don't care about fluorescents, any dimmer will do. Those vary in style and price. So...you need to know what you want from the lights, and then head to a GOOD lighting store and keep reminding them of what you want and see what they have to offer. I had to keep asking them when they showed them too me, what bulbs can I use with those, are they available as fluorescents, will they provide adequate task lighting, is there a dimmer that can used with them that is also compatible with fluorscents? They forgot about one of my requirements a time or two. Now, I don't HAVE to use the fluorescents, but I can, and so can anyone in the future I might sell the house to, so it becomes more energy efficient, yet no one HAS to. My UC lights are not dimmable, so that also makes for nice ambient lighting by making sure the cans are dimmable. Not a simple as running into HD and grabbing some cans if you really want to make sure you are happy with the end result. Hope that helps. Sue

What's the wattage of the mosaic mini pendant? I would think using the light that mimics your vent hood would probably look okay if the sink isn't too close to the peninsula, assuming the wattage is high enough of course. The only concern I would have is a pendant over me instead of over the sink area; might not give appropriate light. Is the vent working? If not, could you take it out? Or maybe doing two smaller recessed lights on either side of that vent (depending how big it is across your sink area) would work better; then you would have the light properly over the sink? This article will attempt to help in your decision about what size of a pendant to use over your kitchen island, and how many pendants to use over your island. Taking into account island size and ceiling height. First the recommendation is The Rule of Three. This rule emphasizes balance by repeating an element three times. Above an island, three pendant lights create a more balanced space than two or four, though the proportion could change the rule of three. In a kitchen with a small island and oversize pendant lights, two pendants would provide enough illumination and three would overwhelm the room. Usually 3 mini pendants are enough for an island that is 8 to 10 feet long. Approximately 2.5 foot apart in this case. But, trust your eye, no one likes the look of pendants that aren't centered above an island. If 4 mini pendants are chosen for one of these bigger islands then 2 foot apart is a better option. No need to be all matchy-matchy with your pendants with the other lights in the room. The same color family would be okay, mixing the different types of glass might not work out so well. For example: if you have an open concept kitchen with an amber glass chandelier over your nook or dining room area, a clear glass pendant over the kitchen island might not work. An open frame pendant, or an amber glass pendant would work better. So you ask how high should I hang my pendants from the island top? Well usually they hang 30 to 36" from the counter top. But when deciding between those 6 inches, consider if there is a cook top in the island, if the cook is a taller person. Usually pendants are hung above eye level of the main cook in the house. So that when that person is cooking the pendants won't block the view to the rest of the space for the cook. Also to consider, what if someone is sitting at your island and the light is too bright for their eyes? It would be nice to be able to dim the lights just a little to ease any discomfort your guests might experience. In the end it's all about balance and the amount of light in the room. Mini pendants are easy to place and come in a variety of styles. While large pendants could be harder to figure out and sometimes have more light branches and would provide a lot of light. Also to consider is ceiling height the shorter ceilings the smaller the light should be, a large light could overwhelm a room with an average 7' 10" ceiling. Again make sure if your going for large lighting with lots of branches of light, put a dimmer on them. You won't be sorry. Also consider some ambient lighting added to your kitchen. This could be achieved with under cabinet lighting and adding some can lights around the perimeter of the room. So in review in my experience; Smaller islands 4 to 5 ft. long can handle 2 (large to medium pendants) Medium islands 6 to 8 ft. long can handle 2 large pendants or 3 medium pendants.
