Repotted Moro

I repotted my Moro today. All that talk about wrong soil mix made me feel a bit uneasy and thought better check it out. It was nothing to worry about but I decided to add a plant insert to the pot so to lighten the pot and at the same time minimize the risk for root rot a bit more.

This is to shows that the roots really did not get deep in the pot

but lots of healthy roots with white tips

It is about 4" to 6" from the bottom of the pot

just need to fill in the edges and we have a happy tree for the next two years to come :)

I will stick with the mix I used which is peat, perlite and vermiculite (already mixed from the garden center) and pine bark mulch for acidity. Yup according to some the death sentence for the trees. But I think my tree did really good on this mix being in there since two years and I'm sure I could have gotten another year out of it.

I would have put it in a bigger pot without the insert. That tree will very soon outgrow the pot (and insert) you put it in. It needs a wider and deeper pot.

Regarding the insert; this is what I found on the manufacturer's website: But with less soil, the roots will be confined forcing nutrients back
into your plants where they belong, producing healthier plants with
bigger blooms .......... This is news to me. I don't believe it. In fact, confining a plant's roots is detrimental to the plant's health!

Vladimir I can not use bigger pots right now or I will not be able to get it in the house for winter. This is already a big pot about 24". i might have to repot next year and the roots will be trimmed back.

It is very odd to purchase a seedling orange tree. It could be 6 to 10 years before a seedling orange even begins to bloom, depending on how good the cultivation of the seedling is given. This is the first time I've heard of a person purchasing a seedling tree. Was this a E-bay purchase? - Silica

First time Gardner, I can answer that. It's technically probably a 'semi' dwarf. But in a container kept tree we can limit size by pruning roots and tops. There are grafted trees regarded more as 'dwarf' that are on Flying Dragon rootstock. But even those can grow to become a proper little tree. I have some on their own roots that I limit their overall size by pruning them pretty aggressively in the early spring. (I also prune the roots back to keep them in the same sized containers) By offering root space the tops tend to grow much better. Citrus grow so quickly in just a couple months they can add back 4ft of growth! Grafted trees tend to grow slower though but still need pruned to maintain a shorter bushy type shape. Hope that helps explain a bit more.

Yes, Duarte Growers are a reputable company, and provide quite a bit of citrus for Lowe's, Home Depot and Costco around here. And dancer, if you copy the .html code right into the body of your message, the photo will appear right in your message. Better than a link :-) And I've got some things to pot up too, but it's in the mid-80's here today, and slated to hit high 80's tomorrow. Plus it's humid. We must be getting some monsoon weather pushing up from the Gulf of Mexico. Hate this muggy hot stuff we get here occasionally. Ugh. Time to flip on the air conditioner, bummer! Patty S.

That's also a hydroponic style of pot ;-) It's refreshing, though, that you want to water more often. Many of the criticisms of 511 are that people don't want to have to water so often. Adding so many holes will surely encourage your containers to dry out sooner. I repotted a Moro into a larger plastic container recently, and the holes at the bottom definitely had to be screened to prevent the mix from falling out. So I'm experimenting with the adhesive dry wall tape that one can buy at damn near any hardware store. I cut sections to cover the holes, then filled the container with mix. So far, so good....although I'm not sure about the durability. But by the time the stuff degrades, I'm sure the mix will be "set" in place.

btw, citrus in general are not going deep with their roots and can tolerate shallower pots. The moro had the root system spread in width but not so much deep. To be honest, this was a surpirse to me. The other advantage for using is that there is an airspace and not direct contact with the cold floor in winter. Plus I can have them sit in the pot bottom with water to regulate humidity in winter without roots in direct contact. We will see how this goes :) Will have some trees planted with this and some trees without.
