Cake Decorating Classes
Comments (16)Why not, no more off topic than dogs and errant bunnies! And it is a way of celebrating holidays..What holiday doesn't have cake associated with it?? I would be very interested in talking about it here, or if they would, another forum. Maybe entertaining?? No one usually posts over there anyway!. Ok, I will have to try a different fondant, and I will check those sites. The few fondants I had were on wedding cakes, and were very sweet! I like whipped cream, buttercream is too sweet for me also, and of course creamcheese, and a choc icing I make. When I was "selling" I was always amazed how much cream cheese I needed for the carrot cakes, and even buying in bulk it was a pricey item. Now I don't keep track of the cost. If someone asks me to make them a cake for an occasion, I just tell them what to buy, and I do it for them. I mean even Ash Wed has a sweet associated with it, HOT CROSS BUNS!...See MoreFall Decor 2014
Comments (52)Wonder what made them rot NHB? I thought they were artificial, they were so perfect. That probably explains why I couldn't find any artificial ones like the large ones. I'll go take a picture of mine in a moment. VioletWest, we call that green, bumpy fruit a horse apple around here. Actually, it's the fruit from a Maclura pomifera aka Bois d'arc, aka Osage Orange, aka bowwood, aka naranjo chino. It's grown across much of the U.S. so chances are it's near you. Easy to spot this time of year because of the littering of fruit on the ground. (p.s. the fruit is inedible to humans but has many therapeutic properties). Trees grown around here are rather ugly, with leaves that look like they have some kind of pox. They are a much more attractive tree in cooler states. Here's my porch and foyer, and all the attempts I have made at decorating. Kind of seems silly to decorate when I haven't finished painting. I could tell you I was going for an artsy shot with these photos, but the truth is I wasn't paying enough attention to keep it level. Comments (101)Littledog, you can get plenty of beautiful fresh flowers out in the sticks in the off-season - if you have enough money to go to the busiest florist you can find every few days and spend top dollar. It's maddening to spend $15 on a simple mixed bunch of flowers at the grocery and have it go all shaggy and horrible-looking in just a few days even if you do all the "tricks". (My mother's a retired florist and blessed with a positively chartreuse thumb, so I know the cut-flower tricks.) If you go to the florist the same bouquet of flowers is more like $30 and you might get another couple of days out of them if their turnover is high enough that you've gotten them really fresh. That adds up to a lot of money mighty fast! And hey, the anti-pillow thing isn't just on the Y chromosome - I see absolutely NO point to the piles of pillows either, especially pillows that are too delicate to actually be used for anything more than looking at. I can't stand it when you can only perch on the very edge of a couch because there are so many pillows on it, and arranging the pile of fiddly little pillows just so every single time you make the bed seems downright ridiculous to me. Last time I checked, I was of the female persuasion. Although I'm unenthusiastic about chocolate, too. :-)...See MoreLatest Descanso Gardens rose news
Comments (154)Unfortunately, I can't give an update on the current conditions at Descanso. It just was too difficult & heartbreaking to continue to go there. The last time I visited the rose garden was June 2016 with Anita Clevenger. She bore witness to the sad destruction of what once was a prominent & unique Southern California destination rose garden. It was obvious that it could only be included in the pre-conference tour for the upcoming October, 2016 HRF Conference, 'No Rose Is Safe: Preserving Roses in a Challenging World', as an example of the worst that can happen to roses in a public garden. At the time of our visit, the greatly diminished collection of Alister Clark roses was struggling under the shade of the overgrown trees above them. Lammerts roses were also struggling amongst Knock Outs. There were only a couple of Dot roses left. The Polyantha beds were still there and they hadn't yet tackled the tangled mess the Centifolia beds had become. The torn up Gallica beds still had not been planted & the plowed up roses were sprouting up again from the remaining roots. Some of the newly planted roses had black spot and were virused. For Star Roses & Weeks to have donated virused roses is inexcusable. But that was two years ago & I have no idea what has happened to the garden since. Seeing as they got off to such a bad start with people who really know little about roses, I can't imagine it's gotten better. They truly have no concept of what they destroyed. Molly Malinick has the title of Rose Garden Horticulturalist there, was fresh out of school, very young but enthusiastic. To her credit she attended the conference. I hope she learned something....See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
