Save money on buying peonies this way.

My largest peonies, Raspberry Sorbet, are from $5.00 root stock, from K. Van Bourgondien (https://www.dutchbulbs.com) "wholesale". Just roots. It took 2 years for blooms but they are the star of the spring show every year! I love watching the plants grow. It does take patience though.
I also shopped for dead looking $5.00 peonies in the local nurseries. End of season, their stems are brown and shriveled up, powdery mildew doing its thing, they didn't have tags, they were a crap shoot. But now my yard is packed with amazing peonies that are red/gold, white with butter cream colored interiors, coral that change color to peach over a week or so (see photo), and bright white. Amazing discoveries, most of them highly fragrant and all super robust. My theory on plants is that they have a will to live,so I give the poorest ones a chance and they come through.
