Yoho... my Meliflua is reblooming
Comments (19)Thanks, folks, for your interest. What I really wanted to share was the climbing habit of this plant and perhaps the relationship between this habit and bloom production. Actually I have two of them, one in Dalat and this one in the photo is in Saigon. The one in Dalat was growing and growing and growing for about 5 years now... but never bloomed, even once! I hope I know what to do with it after I have found out about this one in Saigon. I will surely post photos of the blooms on this plant when the buds open. Nancy, I will take photo of the leaf for you tomorrow (my time). It's dark now. Xuan...See MoreMeliflua finally opens...
Comments (14)Dee, They might average around 5" long, 1.5" wide or so. It's a guess (since the GH is dark - it's the middle of the night and I just got home from work...) Oh, and an update... meliflua flowers are like kerrii - don't grow them over carpet as they drip red sap as they mature. Reached past it today to water another plant and thought I had hurt myself, only to figure out meliflua had "sapped" me! Denise in Omaha...See MoreAny New Favorites You Aquired This Year?
Comments (12)Tina, I just wanted to say thank you and good luck with all your brugs! :) Mike, I hope your cuttings from Iris Marie and Aleya Gardens arrive soon! There's always a treasure or two or three in every trade/order that I get whether it be seeds or plants! And yes, I'll try to keep smiling! I'll be going to Lowe's and Home Depot tomorrow so that'll cheer me up a little. Plus, I'll be getting my two copies of the Codename: Sailor V and Sailor Moon mangas while I'm up there in the area (there's a Barnes and Noble there). I'll post pictures of any plants that I get, the books and my crowning achievement, my Halloween costume! Brad AKA Moonwolf...See MoreH. Meliflua or H. Meliflua ssp. fraterna?
Comments (26)Tish one thing I have learned over the years is that just because one person can or can't grow a certian plant well does not mean that you will have the same experience. There are plants out there that are just plain difficult to grow but there are many factors at play regarding success. If there is a Hoya you really like give it a try because chances are you will be successful. Sometimes you will get a weak cutting that just does not thrive but that's life and chances are if you try again from another source you just might succeed. I took a look at the Hoya site you posted and it may be that the pop ups caused a filter to make your link inactive. I agree that the blooms of Hoya meliflua are very different and I love the look of the nectar stained corolla. Take a look at the translated page in the link below for a look at the habitat of many Philippine Hoyas and when you scroll down click on Hoya meliflua for some photos and a description. The translation is a little confusing so don't worry if it sounds a little off or Latin names are slightly off.
