Any New Favorites You Aquired This Year?

Hi everyone,

My new favorites that I added to my collection this year are:

Pubicalyx "Black Dragon"

Lacunosa "Ruby Sue" and "Sno Caps"

Kerrii

sp. Tanna Island

aff. paziae (just got this one in a trade)

Did anyone aquire new favorites this year? What about your wish lists? I know I keep adding to mine lol.

In other news, all my hoyas are back inside though my Maid of Orleans jasmine and some succulents are still outside. Still fighting mealies too :(. I need to take a spray bottle to them. Time, however, has not been on my side lately and I've been in a personal slump since May (long story). Thankfully, my friends have been keeping a smile on my face and I'm keeping my chin up by focusing on my gardens. I hope you're all doing well!

So far, I think I love my Chelsea best. She's actually growing loads of new leaves and seems to love my NW window! :D I received a double yellow Datura and have been fighting buggies off that thing, it's currently been kicked out the door! lol I've seeds for a double yellow Datura and may just let that one stay outside all winter and see how it does. If it dies, I'll restart with seeds. I'm not in the mood for those little flying bugs.

Currently coping with rooting Brugmansia's and getting everything outside prepped for winter. Other than that, it's all good. :)

I was trying to think of the new Hoyas I have gotten this year and what are my favorites, not an easy thing to narrow down until some start to grow and show their true colours.

If I had to choose my new favorites I would have to say.

Hoya sp Kunming Kina

this yellow Hoya sp from Sulawesi Island

Hoya sp Flores Island

I really like Hoya obtusifolia although if it turns out to be as huge as my Hoya imperalis or as fast a grower I am in big trouble. My Hoya imperalis could easily take over the entire window.
I also finally got my hands on Hoya grifithii which I have wanted for quite some time.

I am still waiting on my cuttings from Iris Marie Liddle and another set from Aleya's Garden but for the time being they are being kept by a friend until they can come visit. There may very well be a new favorite amongst those cuttings.

Oh, yes. Lots :-) When my hubby and I moved into this lovely home, we inherited several mystery citrus trees, all extremely neglected. Zero water, just whatever the previous owners could water by hand, or what the sprinkler would reach (which was essentially zero). Amazing they all survived. For sure I've got a Eureka Lemon and a Meyer Improved. The Meyer is the wunderkind tree - despite the neglect, it is covered with about 200 lemons right now, and it's a dwarf. Last winter I had Meyer lemons coming out my ears. I think this tree due to the neglect, is cycling, instead of having ready fruit all the time. I now have, again, about 200 lemons that are riping. The fruit on the lower branches are turning yellow, and all the fruit towards the top still has a ways to go. 3 other mystery citrus trees yet to be identified - probably lemon, possibly one Valencia orange - all due to no fruit, and I didn't get a good look at the flush to see if it was lemon-like (purplish). Few thorns, but the trees have been here for several years. I just put into the ground today these lovely additions, all semi-dwarf but with the promise from Clausen's that they won't get bigger than 8 feet (personally, in N. San Diego County, I find that hard to believe, but I'm taking him at his word): Rio Red Grapefruit (crossing my fingers we get enough heat) Melogold Grapefruit Cocktail Grapefruit Moro Blood Orange (ditto with the heat) Pixie Tangerine Algerian (Clemintine) Tangerine Bearss Lime I was chatting with a great gal out in Palm Desert on another gardening chat list, and she shared her photos of her Minneola Tangelo sport that is variegated!! I am hoping I can drive out there and get a branch to graft. I've not ever grafted citrus trees, so I'm hoping I can have some success with this. Have to get the right rootstock, so I'll give Clausen's a call and see what I can get so that I have something right for my soil, and won't get too big. The fruit are WAY cool looking!! Too bad I can't grow them from seed, which would be easier. I'll snap some pics of my little orchard up on the hill tomorrow. We're hoping for some nice rain tomorrow morning. I backfilled and topped all the wells with compost, did a very light fertilizing with some Vigiro Citrus, double dripped everything, and I'm going to set up a separate station for just my fruit trees so I can do a once a week deep watering for a bit. Then, once everyone looks happy, move to every 2 to 3 weeks deep watering. And, I'll spray with Spinosad/Volck Oil tomorrow evening after the rains, and hang my pheromone traps. And wrap the trunks to keep the rats, mice, rabbits, gophers and other nasty rodent-type varmints away from the trunks. Lastly, I'll bait for roof rats when the traps come in. I swear to goodness. I'm going to be the only one eating the fruit off these trees! Patty S.

oohh goodness - that is a hard question. But if I must name just a few - here goes. For rapid increase and ever blooming status - the blue ribbon goes to SPECIAL CANDY For ability to settle in quickly and send up a scape within two weeks of arrival - the blue ribbon goes to HALF MOON KEY Tis a stretch of the rules - but since this is a new seedling to bloom this year - it could be considered a new acquisition. Blue ribbon for the favorite bonus plant of the season goes to BUBBA ON TOUR - a blooming maniac that was extremely fertile to boot! And last but not least - my favorite new pink this year goes to PINK ALOHA Shelly

Hi Dan! I had to look up that Agastache 'Coronado Red', since I wasn't familiar with that one. The pictures I found looked more pink than red to me though. How does it look in person? I have 'Apache Sunset' and 'Apricot Sprite'. The 'Apricot Sprite' is new to me this year. 'Apache Sunset' is more of a peachy color, but the 'Apricot Sprite' is a brighter orange, which I really like. There is a big height difference too. 'Apache Sunset' is 3'+, and 'Apricot Sprite' is about 18". How tall is 'Coronado Red'? I'm trying 'Tequila Sunrise' this year too, and the plant is loaded with peppers, but they are all still green. Have yours ripened yet? With a name like 'Volcano', I'm guessing that one is too hot for my family! Bonnie

Mystery! is my favorite, but isn't on as regularly as it used to be-alas. I also like NCIS, the original Law and Order (even with all the cast changes-really like the new Prosecutor), and Law and Order Criminal Intent. I like The Closer, but can never remember when it's on and there are a lot of 10 pm shows I would probably like, but I go to bed early (school starts early, don'tchaknow). House Hunters and HH International are fun, too. We actually know some people who were on House Hunters. Such a disappointment-they had already bought their house and the other two houses were just filmed for the show. Not sure if they are all like that, but this one was not entirely honest. Too bad.

Tina, I just wanted to say thank you and good luck with all your brugs! :)

Mike, I hope your cuttings from Iris Marie and Aleya Gardens arrive soon! There's always a treasure or two or three in every trade/order that I get whether it be seeds or plants! And yes, I'll try to keep smiling! I'll be going to Lowe's and Home Depot tomorrow so that'll cheer me up a little. Plus, I'll be getting my two copies of the Codename: Sailor V and Sailor Moon mangas while I'm up there in the area (there's a Barnes and Noble there). I'll post pictures of any plants that I get, the books and my crowning achievement, my Halloween costume!

My two favorites were a cutting of numm.... and finlaysonii, that I received last spring.

Mainly because the finlaysonii bloomed this summer, and the numm.... has 5 penduncles budding up now.

So they both were fast producers lol

Let's see, I got a lot of new plants this year...

H. australis ssp. australis and ssp. melanesica are both growing like weeds, so I am very fond of them already.

Numm, square leaf, and Iris Marie are also really awesome. Square leaf- sorry, rotundiflora, and Iris Marie have been on my list for a couple of years.

I saw some gorgeous full plants of variegated kerrii for sale at a local nursery for $20 so I'm trying to make it back there soon.

In non-Hoya news, I love my Desert Rose and newest Jade plant too!

Square leaf is very sweet (is that rotundiflora or rotundifolia? Seriously, I don't know). The nicest little square leaves, and a bright apple green.

Pimenteliana has the most elegant leaves and that shimmer! Very subtle so far as my plant is young, but I suspect that will enhance as it takes off.

Diptera for just being so, so, so ready to please (gotta watch that girl). What a pretty, happy little plant.

Moonwolf: not too sure of the situation, but make sure you get lots of outdoor time. The light levels are way better outside for when things get challenging and our emotional resiliency is low.

Oooh! Looks like everyone's plants are doing well! lol I forgot about H. rotundiflora being on my wish list! I just LOVE those flowers that it produces!

Klyde, thank you! I'm not sure if it's rotundiflora or rotundifolia? Mike might know though. I'll try to get outdoors as much as possible. I usually go on walks and things and that helps clear my head a little. Plus anytime I work with my plants, indoors or out, that puts me in a good mood. The weather's supposed to be nice this weekend so maybe I'll put up the spider webs for Halloween too :).

I assume it is rotundiflora since the "flora" parts are round but the "folia" parts are not. I could be wrong, but IMO it would be a non-sequiter to name a square leafed plant "round leaf". Like Brad said, Mike will probably come along and let us know for sure.

I think that means "Fat Flower". LOL... I liked the name better when it was sp. square leaf. Ha.

That's one I really want to get...

I couldn't pick any specific one as a favorite really, there's always something about each and every one I love. =) I know, I know... Besides, I just bought a new one today! Loaded with blooms! So who can pick just one? I know I can't! Heh!
