I, on the other hand, prefer the hanging look for many of my Hoyas. I like to let them twine around the hangers and climb upwards. When they reach the ceiling, I trim them (because I don't like the look of them climbing across the ceiling.) The pruning forces them to produce growth lower, which then creates more twining upwards. Eventually, I get a very full-looking plant that's fairly tidy (as long as I keep those at the ceiling trimmed.) This works well for the upward-growing carnosa, pubicalyx, etc. types. I also like those that trail down from a hanging pot, like tsangii and wayetii. And are you saying that you have seperate plants, all-green and variegated together? Or are you saying that segments of the variegated plants have gone all-green? I remove the all-green shoots on my variegated Hoyas because they will eventually take over the plant if you don't. My rooted cuttings off the variegated plants bloom for me, but my variegates don't. Maybe someday... Denise in Omaha

It's kind of a moot point anyway, since I went back and got the plant today. But yeah, I do tend to think that it's probably a lacunosa -- it's one of very few Hoyas I've managed to find that had heart-shaped leaves (there's a pretty good likeness at www.myhoyas.com, one of the pictures, which I found through maidinmontana's thread), and my understanding is that lacunosa is one of the more commonly available Hoya species. I went with the all-green one. Normally I like a little variegation, but this particular plant is nice-looking without. Thanks for the responses.

Mentha, I think that H. carnosa rubra variegata is the proper botanical name for 'Krimson Princess." My understanding is that back in the 1970's, someone marketed the two variegates using the trade names 'Krimson Princess' and 'Krimson Queen.' I've been told it was more of a gimmick to sell the same plant that was already in distribution under a different name. Kind of like the sports of Jade. You'll see the one that's called 'Gollum' marketed as 'Shrek Ears.' It's the same plant, but give it a new name and it's like it's something NEW. But here's the thing - I don't call the solid greens that I take off my KP "rubra" because it looks nothing like the one I KNOW is rubra. So I just call it another clone of carnosa. I know - it's all terribly confusing. Which is why it's better to use the true botanical names of plants, even though it's charming to use loveable names like "Sweetheart Hoya," or "Wax Plant," or when we come up with our own special names. Hi Mel, I grow my carnosa in a hanging pot and it's getting those long vines too. If you do put it on a trellis make sure you don't clip the tips downward, as they'll die off. Many people use those orchid clips to hold their hoyas in place. Bread ties, yarn or even Velcro tape. It's this green tape sold for holding plants to their support. My home-ec teacher has hers in a hanging basket (where I got my first cutting from). It was beautiful when it flowered! When I had Krimson Queen, it too, was in a hanging basket. Brad AKA Moonwolf
