Bunchberries were a part of my childhood too. They were in the woods, along with teaberries and Trailing Arbutus where my friends and I played, and swung on the 'monkey' (grape) vines. Ahhhh, fond childhood memories!

Miner's lettuce, also known as purslane, was eaten by miners during the California gold rush to stave off scurvy. It is high in vitamin C, vitamin A and iron. An early spring green, it is prolific on the west coast of the United States.

I have a ceiling fan and when I see the shadows it looks like a duck holding a spear to me! I will snap a pic and see if anyone else agrees in the next few days. I am glad the clouds are amusing you guys! They were gorgeous!

DawninCal, Purslane is common in all the places I have gardened, PA OH and MI. At least I was told by the 'natives' that it was purslane. None of it looked like that in your pic. Is there more than one variety? Does anyone know?

This pretty Red Spotted Purple made several visits to the porch yesterday.

I looked up it's range and it showed them on the west coast ranging from British Columbia all the way south into Central America and east into Alberta, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah and Arizona. The botanical name given was Claytonia perfoliata. Perhaps there is more than one plant known as purslane?

Outside Playing, I have never seen a blue butterfly before. There is one that is native to Thailand, but I haven't seen it either. Your butterfly is a beauty!

The one you are probably thinking of is Portulaca oleracea the
succulent resembling the Moss Rose also known as purslane.

Plants are known by various common names in different parts of the country, hence the need to have the correct botanical or Latin name for ID as that is universal.

DarwininCal, the purslane that I am familiar with is portulaca oleracea. And yours is in the Portulacaceae family . Yours and mine are a member of the same family, but look quite different Learn something new every day.

I can always count on the gardeners here to teach me new things. I'm a wannabe gardener who knows just enough to be dangerous, but someday maybe I'll have the green thumb like so many of you here at the KT! :-)

Thanks Dawn. There are actually a couple of others seen around here that have blue coloring on the inside of their wings. Sometimes the outside of their wings is totally different. Or vice versa.
