If you want them to lay flush against the house, I don't know how else you'd hang them w/out punching a hole.

Could you hang them from an eave or under hang?

Hi! Yes, welcome. I don't have any suggestions on how you can hang your items, we have aluminum siding and the same delima. What I would suggest though is that you cross post this in the decorating forum. It's busy there too and I'm always amazed at the creative suggestions people offer for things like this.

Does 3M make a product for outdoor use? Their command hooks sound like just what you need.

Would these work? I use the ones for brick to hang a wreath without drilling a hole.

Hello, and no, you can't mount them securely without a penetration fastener of some sort. The best method is to fasten to an internal stud or plywood sheathing behind the siding. Metal/wood stars usually come with pre-tapped holes and screws. Your job is to find a solid substrate to mount it.

Siding clips are considered a temporary mounting option and when the storms come through, everything not anchored securely ends on the ground, goes through a window, or causes damage to the siding.

Thank you all! I will continue thinking this over, the side of the house is so bare (no windows) and it really needs something, but I'm still not sure I want to drill holes in the siding. I tend to be a bit fickle about decorating and change my mind from time to time.

How about planting some interesting shrubs that will grow tall on that side of the house? We had a foundation planting of bridal veil shrubs that grew to 6 feet along one side of my childhood home. When they bloomed, they were resplendent with little white blooms. Bridal Veil is a kind of Spirea. Or add some small patio type trees that will stay small along the side yard.

The trellis might be an option, I hadn't thought of that. The house is located on solid rock, so nothing is planted in the ground around it. I remember spirea, my grandmother had bushes and I loved it! She grew it with flowering quince.

Hanging from the eaves is the best option. Much like a picture rail in the old houses so as not to put a hole in the plaster and lathe walls. Connect a metal wire from the hanger on the star up to the eave of the house and to a screwed in hanger. I would coat the corners of the star with a clear silicone caulk to prevent the metal from scratching the siding.

It's very likely that you will void the warranty if you are going to put holes in the vinyl siding and any other type of siding. Check with the manufacturer.

I think another concern is if that star rusts or moves around a little. You may end up getting marks and stains that are permanent even if you decide to remove the decoration.

Drilling holes in siding doesn't void the warranty. Shutters are installed by drilling holes and installing push in friction fasteners in vinyl and screws in aluminum. The critical part is keeping moisture from seeping in to the wall.

Dryer vents are installed with screws and that doesn't void a warranty.

I know plenty of people who use these metal, not drill hangers for their outside decorations.
