Best way to label trees?
Comments (24)Good to have labels on the tree for a quick glance, also good for your kids and friends visiting / picking fruits. Also good when cutting scions. Those Leevalley labels would be too small for me, I want them large so you can read from a distance! Fast and easy is a must for me,..stamping would make it too slow, I can write larger, [or smaller] and faster right out by the tree free hand with a cordless engraver. I just take a bunch of cut labels and wires out to the garden. Double up the wire holes, so labels don't spin in the wind and facing always to you for the ease of reading....See Morebest way to plant 30-35 trees easily
Comments (31)So long story short: here I am, ready to get my trees next week and still no holes dug yet. Winter in Colorado was unusually awful and I was buried from December through 3rd week in March. Had a couple weeks to dig holes in nice weather -- didn't, wife said too early ... and it's been crap weather since (rain all day, or snow). So this weekend the weather MIGHT cooperate ... being 50's on Sat and 60's on Sun ... so I'm thinking about getting a ditch witch with a 36" hydraulic auger on it and doing the following for each hole I dig. I have a bad back -- yeah, it's been repaired -- but I'm using the machine mainly to make things easier on myself and yes, faster. The hole locations have been determined on my plans, which have changed a bit since I last posted the plans here ... and I still need to mark them in the yard and make sure they avoid the utilites [ which have been marked ]. THe buried utilities should be 19" down (or more). When I trench my entire back yard for sprinklers, I never had a thing and was working with a 10-14" deep trench. The utility company said a minimum of 17", but that was done before my builder back-filled and additional 6-18" on top of the original grade. So I'll rake back the mulch in a 4' (or 5') wide circle around each hole location, then auger out the 3' diameter hole, only down 12-15" max. This is for the dirt to have somewhere to go without ruining too much mulch in the process. [Q: should I even worry about my 4-5" of mulch?] The plan would be to rake the mulch back around the tree (not too close) after the trees are planted. Then I'll back fill the outer 10-12" of the 3' hole by hand (shovelling) the edges to create a bowl shape hole which is full depth in the center 12-15" and then tapered to the edges with the back fill. Do I need to rake the mulch back, or could I just auger into the mulch and all? Any ideas or comments appreciated. THe local "colorado experts" still say amending is normal around here, but I'm tempted to skip it and let the trees finds happiness in what I have. I could mix some mulch in if that would help. My mulch is about 2 years old and nice and black (soil-like) on the bottom. Planting about 15 bare root trees and 15 balled and bulapped. I'm having to kind of guess on the actual size of the trees since I really don't know till next week when I go to pick them up. They are advertised as 1.25" caliper. Thanks, Scott...See Morestake weeping cherry the right way???
Comments (7)I am with you guys. Thank you very much. It was my ignorance to think that the tree itself would turn into a proper tree "form", when I got the seedling one and a half years ago. I could have complained about it to the nursery, for it had one year warranty. However, the tree has been getting messy and messier. Now, I cannot complain it to the nursery, for it's over a year. No matter what now, I don't wish to get rid of this tree. It is a messy abnormal weeping cherry, unlike anything in an ad picture that the nursery used. However, it is a life, especially it is growing pretty well, except Japanese beetles bothering it. If I can do anything to try to train the tree, I would and will, even with only the slightest chance to make it into anything close to a tree form. I want it to be the average height, much higher than 6 ft, I assume. Since I don't prune trees much, I don't remember how to properly prune a tree. However, I have some books handy, and I can always read the pruning sections when I need it. If you have any suggestions of pruning, please advice me. Actually, I was a little confused about how to prune a tree to make it grow the direction I want. If I were to get rid of one of the trunks, how do I make the remaining one straight? neither one grows straight; they pretty much grow in a 45 degree angle....I cannot anticipate how the only trunk would grow "side way" without the other. At least now, they both depart from the center, and they kind of balance out on each other. I am a little afraid of the result once I dare doing something. However, I really really really want a TREE looking tree. People have asked me what it is the strange looking THING. I feel embarrassed somewhat. I want a TREE...See MoreBest/easiest way to plant pine tree seelings
Comments (26)Your probably going to have a wait few years to use your trimmer or herbicide around your trees. That's what I was planning on doing right after I planted my trees. After the spring growth, when the time finally came to take care of the weeds, I saw I was wrong. There just not room to do either with out doing some kind of damage. Your seedlings are in such a weak state right now and that will last the first year. Don't expect to see much growth the first year, but hang on, because the second year the trees will grow fast. Just do what I did and mark their location somehow so you can keep your eye on them the first year or two. Good luck and keep us informed on their growth. I am having about 200 more trees (loblolly pine) planted this winter. 100 professionally and 100 or so myself. We had some problems with the timber company next to our property this past summer. They destroyed our fence in two places. They drove a dozer through the gaps and did something. And the heat from their fires scorched a bunch of our large oaks. (we had already lost about 50 large oaks do the drought of 2010). The worse part about it (my opinion) is that they didn't even tell us, I had to find out about it by walking the edges our property. About 10 calls later to different agencies (county, state and the feds) this was the deal we came up with. treenutt...See Moreraymondranch
