Concerned about oak tree

Pictures shown. I noticed this in my young live oak this morning. Seems as it came out of nowhere? Is this a concern? The tree seems to be showing new growth and does not look sick; this "wound" has me worried though.

Did something chew on your tree? If so, it could come back. Looks like a small injury that the tree could overcome, but maybe put some 3 foot tall chicken wire around it?

Cloe, all tree roots are shallower than is often thought. How old is your sewer line? If it's a newer PVC type, I'd not worry. If it's an old cast iron affair, than age and the way those were put together could allow for root penetration. And of course you can dig on your own property. Maybe get some of that root barrier stuff consisting of Typar impregnated with slow-release herbicide. +oM

In theory, sand and other fine particles can be used if the drainage is such that the water quickly drains out of the area that the roots occupy. In practice, sand in a pot is a very bad idea unless your pots are the size of buckets. Small containers don't have the depth to drain water away from the root zone, and they don't have enough mass to keep the sand damp enough for the roots to take water from. Consider garden soil. It works fine in the garden, even pure clay soil, because the stuff around a plant's roots is connected to a huge drain-cum-reservoir. Dig up a chunk of soil and put it in a pot outside and suddenly it gets soupy too quickly and dries solid too quickly. In practice, anyone who's asking for advice on succulents and soil should be discouraged from sand and other fine particles. It's too much of a balancing act -- just use a gritty mix so that you can water the plant as often as you like without worrying about drowning it.

@grizzlysean_z9b There wasn't any heavy construction or anything like that. There was some painting and tile work where paint/mortar buckets were rinsed near the tree, but that's it. @ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 I'm in Northern California in the Sacramento area. The winter here was very dry, as you may have heard, since we're in the midst of a drought. The summers here are notoriously hot, usually with plenty of days in the 90s/100s. Looking at pictures of this house from google street view though, this tree seems to have been somewhat thin for a while (or at least whenever the pictures were taken).

Was this tree recently delivered to you? It looks like handling injuries to me. What about weedeater damage? Call your local extension office to see if voles or other rodents are a problem in your location.

I wouldn't call it a minor injury at all.

though there is a good chance it looks like weedwhipper damage.. or animal ....

it seems the wood was previously rotted ... the large bruise around the damage.. indicates to me.. there is much more extensive damage ...

we will need to see the other side of the tree from the damage.. to opine as to how much intact cambium layer there may be ... i can explain further after that pic ...

while your out there.. take a pic of the whole ... so we can see general vigor ...

and add your location.. just for the heck of it ...
