Concerned about Camphor tree

We recently bought a house that has two camphor trees. One appears to be thriving while the other is very thin with numerous dead branches throughout. I'm concerned about the health of this tree and wanted to get some input.

You can see from the pictures that the foliage on this tree is not very thick, with many of the smaller branches throughout the tree having no leaves. The center of the tree is very open, with most of the branches having been pruned or dead.

By comparison, the other camphor tree on our property seems much fuller, though it does get more direct sunlight.

Any advice is appreciated.

Just a guess -- was there much recent construction or any other disturbance near the trees?

where are you.. how was winter??? .. and anything else you think might help us ... other than the shear fact.. its canopy is thin

though there is a good chance it looks like weedwhipper damage.. or animal .... it seems the wood was previously rotted ... the large bruise around the damage.. indicates to me.. there is much more extensive damage ... we will need to see the other side of the tree from the damage.. to opine as to how much intact cambium layer there may be ... i can explain further after that pic ... while your out there.. take a pic of the whole ... so we can see general vigor ... and add your location.. just for the heck of it ... ken

Thanks, Rachel, I know that, but my concern is whether I have a dying tree that could possibly fall down in high winds. It just seems odd to me that one has most of its leaves, and the one in question has lost most of them.

I would use the stake or bigger stake to pull the limbs up to a vase position. Your tree is too young/small to cut any foliage off. Over time your tree will send out water sprouts to take over as the main trunk. It can take years before this will fill out. Meanwhile enjoy the fruit it makes each year. Steve.

@grizzlysean_z9b There wasn't any heavy construction or anything like that. There was some painting and tile work where paint/mortar buckets were rinsed near the tree, but that's it.

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 I'm in Northern California in the Sacramento area. The winter here was very dry, as you may have heard, since we're in the midst of a drought. The summers here are notoriously hot, usually with plenty of days in the 90s/100s. Looking at pictures of this house from google street view though, this tree seems to have been somewhat thin for a while (or at least whenever the pictures were taken).
