Micro Tom Tomatoes
Comments (7)I have grown them 3 times, and each time I am disappointed with the taste. Given the effort and time growing a tomato indoors, I would recommend a bush tomato. If you give a bush tomato plant enough light, it will stay relatively compact, 2-3 feet tall, and more importantly, you will be rewarded with juicy tomatoes. I realize a standard Aerogarden won't accommodate a bush tomato, but my experience with the Micro Tom is that it is more of an ornamental plant....See MoreTiny Toms Tomatoes
Comments (3)The only tomato variety named "Tiny Tom" that I know of is an Australian variety and I've never seen them for sale here. I don't even think I've ever seen seeds of these available here. Some of the very small tomato plants suitable even for exceptionally small containers include Tiny Tim, Micro Tom, Red Robin, Orange Pixie, Yellow Canary, Small Fry, Florida Basket, Tumbling Tom Red and Tumbling Tom Yellow (the two tumbling varieties are ideal for hanging baskets). Of those, you might find Tiny Tim, Small Fry, Florida Basket or either of the Tumbling Toms in a nursery if it carries a really large selection of varieties. If you are looking for a tomato that would do well in a 5-gallon container, there are many although you are unlikely to find many of them in a commercial nursery. You might find Window Box Roma or Husky Red Cherry available commercially, or for full-sized tomatoes from a determinate plant, New Big Dwarf is an outstanding one, and I see it every now and then in stores. Any tomato described as a Determinate probably could be grown in a 5-gallon container. In case you are interested in seeing some of the smaller varieties available from seed, I've linked the website of the Tomato Growers Supply Company. All the tomatoes in the linked section produce small-fruit, but not all of them are container-sized plants. Still, it gives you a good idea of what is available from seed. The selection in stores is significantly smaller. Dawn Here is a link that might be useful: Small-fruited Varieties from TGSC...See MoreSpring Season 2017
Comments (84)So after checking on my garden today, it looks like I might have to start over. They look much worse due to me fertilizing them again. Also that storm that came through late last night tore them up pretty good. I think my best bet is to probably take cuttings from the plants that still look somewhat healthy and maybe cut the plants down to the lowest growth tip and see if they will recover. This was my first time attempting to grow tomatoes in the ground, even though I wasn't too successful I still managed to get some ripe tomatoes and the experience has taught me some valuable lessons. I cant get too upset with myself, as much as it does suck, I still have my other grow site and my house garden. I'm going to probably start another thread about my other grow site. Thanks for all the comments, hope to see you in my next thread. The other grow site is one I've been working on since last October. It was a super sandy piece of land that I've been amending with leaves and compost for a while now. Its finally taking shape and my tomato plants seem to be happy at the moment. The before This past winter Prepping for tomatoes I think I planted them around 4/7ish and this is from 4/20 Todays Pic 5/01...See MoreShow Your Garden ...2017
Comments (37)I just got my tomatoes all planted. I have 9 in the plot at the community garden. I thought back to picking all those juliets last year at the garden and even though there were only 4 plants, it was a project. So I planted only large tomatoes there this year, except for 2 pearly pink orange plants, also down there I have Lithium Sunset, Girl Girl's Weird Thing, Pineapple, Dwarf Beauty King, Wherokowhai, Tennessee Suited, and Pit Viper. Doesn't look like much, but it will in a few weeks. It also has chives, onions, peas, zucchini, and romaine lettuce. Also found these today, probably juliets Today, I planted the home garden that is only tomatoes. I did the cardboard and mulch method of preparing the bed. During winter, I covered the grass with cardboard, and in spring I covered that with several inches of alfalfa hay, then gave my rabbits free access. When I dug into the dirt under the cardboard today, I found tons of worms and the dirt was almost entirely worm castings. Then there's all that rabbit poo. Should be a nice garden. I'll add some more mulch after the tomato plants get a little bigger. There are 36 plants in here. The ones closest to the camera are dwarf varieties, most of the cherries are along the chain link fence because there are kids next door and I don't know if they have grabby fingers, but if they do, I'd rather they took the cherries. In this garden I have: New Big Dwarf, Tennessee Suited, Dwarf Beauty King, Pit Viper, Pink Bumblebee, Reverend Michael Keyes, Indigo Cherry Drops, Chocolate Stripe, Orange Russian 117, Green Zebra, Green Zebra Cherry, Cherokee Lime, Girl Girl's Weird Thing, Idaho Hillbilly, and Juliet f2....See More14tomatoes_md_7a
