It is more likely that they are the 'clean-up crew' once the tuber started rotting.

Your bed looks like it is high enough to not have the tubers standing in soggy soil... not really sure why else they would be rotting (sorry- maybe someone else has an idea about the cause). You can take the sprouts and plant them as deep as possible, and they might root on their own without the tuber... all is not lost. I'd do that with any ailing plant where the tuber is obviously rotting. You can clean up the rot as best you can, and replant the tuber after a day or two in the air... might sprout again for you.

A couple years ago I lost around a hundred plants in a new bed that was too low in an extremely rainy July, and have since raised the bed so the tubers are above the grass line. That year, I saved a lot of the varieties by replanting the ailing sprouts deep into the bed with only the tops peeking out. Very late (and sometimes none) blooms, but I was able to grow them again the next year at least.

I second Cici's advice, cut off the sprout and stick it in the soil. Pull out the tuber and cut off the rot, let it dry for a few days and then replant. I had this problem with one of mine this year and I ended up with one plant growing from the sprout and one growing from the tuber! 2 for 1!!!! good luck.

Omgosh, U have sprouts!! If I were u , I would Cut the rotting parts of the tubers out & get some root stimulator. Bonide root & grow or Fertilome root stimulator are the bomb! Without it I wouldn't have as many plants as I do now it's a plant savor! U can Pot up the sprouts w/ what's left of the tuber ( after cutting out the mushy stuff) into a light organic potting Mix & water well w/root stimulator ( follow directions on back) I planted 42 tubers this year - out of 42 , 4 of them rotted -lucky ducky barely had ANY tuber left but I was able to save them all bc of the root stimulator:) :) while the remaining good parts of the tuber slowly start to rot again - I'm guessing- it fed the sprouts until they were able to grow new roots. After a week & half or so - I went & carefully dug up the sprouts to see that the rest of the tuber rotted around the sprout but the sprouts grew their own roots- whoopie!! I was able to save jens wedding, lucky ducky, new dimension & blue bayou by doing this :) if it's really hot right now where u live, I would keep them in shady spot until they root. I also used smaller pots so I didn't rot the remaining parts of the tuber faster than it could grow roots & so I could also keep an eye on the water saturation, ect.. good luck ! :) :) :)

Plz try the root stimulator. without it your chances of rooting aren't as high being it's summer time. I would leave the sprouts on the tuber & leave as much of the tuber as possible, only cutting out bad parts. I also saved other sprouted tubers this way but they were dahlias I didn't care for so I gave them away. I understand rooting hormone is controversial as far as if it works for cuttings & in my opinion, the powder form sucks. I did try an experiment on the use of liquid root stimulator on a few potted roses & flowers of the same. I watered one of each weekly w/root stimulator & the comparisons w/plain water. I checked the roots of all plants b4 doing this & also after 1 month. The ones watered w/ stimulator had twice as many roots as the ones I watered w/only water. I didn't use any other fertilizers & made sure the comparisons were the same variety. I swear by this stuff & always have extra on hand along w/my liquid seaweed, fish emulsion & granular kelp ;) good luck happy gardening guys
