what is this snake?

So, I took a walk with a friend and found a small snake, but I'm not sure what kind it was. I live in NH, and was near some water. I'll post a pic, but here's a description in case it isn't very clear to see:

About 7 or 8 inches, give or take, and the width of a pencil. Round pupils, white underside, no markings near the eyes or mouth. I think it may be a garter or ribbon snake, but I really don't know. (And I know I probably shouldn't have touched it, I actually thought it was dead when I picked it up)
