Laminated storm window for noise reduction
Comments (1)All noise? No, that is very difficult and expensive. It should help somewhat - possibly a great deal. But first I would be sure that your current windows are tight. Laminated glass is used in airports and sound studios for the same purpose......See MoreWindows noise reduction
Comments (4)As you thought, "lite" is simply a term used to describe one sheet of glass. The most common thickness of laminated glass in North America is probably 3mm / .76mm / 3mm. Impact products increase the interlayer to 2.29mm and might use any glass thickness from 3mm to 6mm depending on the application. Using different thicknesses of glass in a laminated make-up will have some affect on sound propagation. Monolithic laminated glass at any make-up will be a noticeable improvement over a single lite of annealed glass. A laminated glass make-up of 3mm / .76mm / 5mm should perform very well in sound application. Your mom and pop shop folks are not correct when they say that the frame is more important than the glass make-up - however, a tight frame and rigid construction will be much better than a loose frame and sash assembly. If the window leaks air, it will pass sound....See MoreSliding doors and sound reduction
Comments (2)Thanks toddlinmn. I was thinking the same thing. I guess I may not have a choice as it sounds like getting and 8' x 8' double pane window will be cost prohibitive. I put 8 of them in my house a few years ago, but I think I must have gotten good prices. So it looks like I will have to do two sliders, If they meet in the middle, I still think the laminated glass will help? I'd hate to pay for it if the sliders let in too much noise to make it worth it. The sliders will also be laminated glass....See MoreWindow help - lamination for sound resistance
Comments (35)Thank you all for the comments. They are so helpful! - The walls are all block. There is no attic, but I will insist the ceiling space is heavily insulated. I believe they are using spray insulation. - It is a midcentury home with lots of glass. I didnt know any better when I replaced the glass in the existing home with lowE double pane glass. I think this is where a lot of noise is coming through. - I worry that because the glass incorporates sliders the noise mitigation will be lessened. There is also an aluminum framed glass door in the back, which will be weather sealed. I asked that the slider in the bedroom have weather stripping to seal it, but not the two big sliders to the pool as it makes them harder to open. The sliders will also have double lami. The company is service aluminum. I think they do high rise buildings and condos. - Thank you for the info about the tempered glass!!! It is just in time as the windows will be ordered monday, if not already. Hopefully, the tempered info is incorrect but I will clarify. The block wall is for privacy and to help with sound. The rest of the house:...See Morerockybird
