Lake house floor plan thoughts
Comments (6)Building on a lake lot usually comes with a whole additional set of restrictions, at least that was the case with our lake home. I looked at so many plans before we contacted the builder but none of them would have ended up working for our lot, the views we wanted to highlight, or the building requirements. Between our architect and builder they were able to design a house that was perfect for us and met all the requirements for a lake build. Because of that I wouldn't get your heart too set on a plan until you have a lot in mind and have researched the building restrictions. That said I do know that I also loved looking at plans and dreaming of what could be in the months before we got serious about the project . We ended up building a two story. Yes - up was definitely cheaper than out. We couldn't have had a bigger footprint anyhow without having to have special variances - and that's with only a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house. We did a unattached garage partly for cost but mainly because it just fit better on the lot. We also wanted to keep the lake views for the main areas so the master bedroom is on the opposite side and we put it downstairs for aging purposes. It's also much nicer having that buffer between the bedroom and the deck area if there are people staying out later. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bath. That gives company their own dedicated space. With 2-zone heat we can always keep the temp lower up there when it's not in use. We are so happy with our finished product. I can't wait until the day when we can retire and live there permanently. It doesn't get much better for me than to be able to spend a relaxing day at the lake....See MoreThinking about buying lake house...ugly front...help me for cheap
Comments (26)I would whitewash the brick. You should only have to do it once in your lifetime if it's done right, and it gives style and character to even the most uninspiring builders' bricks. Google "whitewash brick" and look at the images, and then click on askthebuilder for more information. Then I would get rid of the shutters, paint the trim and door a nice soft but rich watery blue or green, like one of the variety of traditional trim colors of Cape Cod shingle cottages. I'd hang deep window boxes in the same blue or green under the windows, and build planter boxes, same color as the boxes, along the perimeter of the terrace. I'd paint the gable end and the columns the same tone as the whitewash. The gable design is more problematic, since it is not centered on the door, and if you add more columns, you need to be sure that they aren't too close together, which can make it hard to get things in and out. The biggest design challenge I see is that the gable end needs an architrave...a horizontal base to the siding...and the columns need to be fatter, correctly tapered, have the proper bases and capitals, and moved in from the edges by a foot or so. Then I'd get on with the pleasure of what looks like a charming getaway!...See MoreFront entrance new home at lake
Comments (11)The architect just had a very small deck and landing in the plan. Looked like a small hay basket. I would like something with more curb appeal. There will eventually be a garage on the left side. Front door is the farthest opening left. This would be considered the front of the house, the side you drive up too.....but lake side is the real "front"....See MoreBack for more great advice! Lake house plans.
Comments (6)When my DH and I were house hunting, one of the houses we looked at was brand new. Hubby said "This would be great if we knocked out this wall!" I told him it was rather silly to tear down brand new walls - better to find a house that suited our needs (which we eventually did). Mark is saying the same thing - rather than start with a plan that doesn't suit your needs (and has a prominent feature that your wife hates, with good reason), instead of trying to adjust this plan to meet your needs, you are much better off starting with a plan that suits your lot, your family, and your needs. While there might be an internet plan out there that would work better for you, an architect could design a house just for you....See Morebpath
