Can you be a little more specific. What books did you enjoy?

I am a Nora Roberts fan...her novels, not her trilogy's. I loved Obsession, The Witness is very good. her new book, Come Sundown, has great reviews. I have not read it yet.....have a hold on it at the library.

SOme of her older novels that come to mind are Carolina Moon, Rivers End, Black Hills, Angels Falls.

Sandra Browns older novel, also titled The Witness, is one of my favorites. ALso love Karen Robards novels.

Oooh, I like everything Michael Connelly writes. The Black Echo was the first Harry Bosch book.

I agree with anything Michael Connelly has written. Would also suggest anything by Harlan Coben, Joseph Finder or Louise Penny. If you do Louise Penny, start at the beginning of her Inspector Gamache series, as all the characters and story lines build on the previous books.

I'm a fan on Connelly, too. One of my favorite writers, In the same vein is John Lescroart, who has a cast of police and attorneys in San Francisco. Very well written, I've recently been reading thru Steve Martini's books. I do enjoy the crime/attorney books, you can tell,

In other genre, I recently finished JK Rowling's "The Casual Vacancy", and I recommend it highly. Parents and teens in a small English town. And "Big Little Lies", which is great.

Don't know if this is your thing but it's one of my all time favorites. I couldn't put it down. It disrupted my life.

An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris is a fictionalized but accurate version of the the Dreyfus Affair which was a spy scandal in late 19th century France. Fascinating and very readable.

Oly, I saw the series. I hate when that happens! It is hard to read the book once I have seen the movie kind of thing. However, I love seeing a movie after I have read a book about it.

Sounds like the book is likely much better than the show.

11/22/63 is incredible. I haven't been able to read any other Stephen King books before this.

Do you like non-fiction? Erik Larson writes non-fiction like a thriller. I especially love Dead Wake, In the Garden of Beasts, and Devil in the White City.

I'd also highly recommend Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes trilogy. Definitely cannot put down reading and once you get into the first one, you've got two more to enjoy!

Second the Daniel Silva Gabriel Allon books and again, there are a lot to work your way through.

One of my reading quirks is that I love the thrill of discovering a book series that's been ongoing; you can start with book 1 and basically binge read the way one can binge watch a tv series LOL.

Ak, did you ever read the Perri O'Shaughnessy series of books set in Lake Tahoe? They are murder mysteries involving a single-parent female attorney. Written by two sisters, I enjoyed them very much. They haven't written anything new lately but you should be able to find the series in paperback or e-books.

I have not read any of the books mentioned. I have read a book or two by Nora Roberts.

Anything Anne Tyler or Alice Hoffman. I liked all of John Irving's earlier books.

Mary Higgins Clark, only thing is that you can read them in one day!

Funny how different we all are! I won't usually watch a movie after I've read the book because I have my own images in my head and I don't want those replaced by Hollywood. I think one exception (well two but only one I want to admit to) is the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. I loved those books so much, but couldn't wait to see the movies. The other, she admits sheepishly, was the Twilight Series. I enjoyed both the books and movies very much.

Thrillers..you remember "The Name of The Rose", by Umberto Eco? They made a movie of it..a rather good one too

It is scary as hell and very engaging and interesting..he does pack inside all the info he knows about the times described, and he knew A LOT..))

If you haven't read it yet-I highly recommend it. That's so much more than just a thriller, but it's thrilling enough.

Medical murder mystery, just discovered & like Peter Clement books.

Another shout-out for 11/22/63. I also have read nothing else by Stephen King, but this book knocked me out. It ought to be considered a great American novel, for all that King puts into it in terms of research, thoughtfulness, and imagination, with a tremendous rendering of time and place!

Am also a Michael Connelly fan; he wrote my all-time favorite thriller, Void Moon, which is not about Bosch, but instead is a one-off about a remarkable heroine who is definitely on the other side of the law.

If you liked Dan Brown and DaVinci Code, try the books of Steve Berry. Fanciful, but historically based and well-written. Wonderful settings all over Europe, descriptions of major cathedrals and other sites.

Everything by Kate Atkinson. Read in order.

I've heard very good things about this captivating non-fiction book which has many elements of dramatic thriller fiction. But it's a true story. I plan on reading it.

Sometimes Cormac McCarthy writes a great American novel; every so often the Coen brothers make a great American film – and in the best traditions of American journalism, someone comes up with a story that cuts to a kernel of the national narrative; here is one of those.

The timing of David Grann’s historical investigation into the systematic murder of Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma during the first quarter of the 20th century could not be more cogent. In the time it took to write his own signature, President Donald Trump in January negated months of protest, and a rare victory, by the Standing Rock Lakota nation in stopping a gas pipeline through sacred lands and a reservoir crucial to the tribe’s water supply. Trump overturned a moratorium on the pipeline, which now proceeds regardless of the Native nation’s ancestral rights and traditions, wellbeing and sensibilities.

Grann’s story is an ancestor to this tragedy: about how the cynical greed of the initial oil rush, and quick money it promised, led to a sinister – but also singular — persecution and mass murder of the Osage.

We are horribly accustomed to histories of the obliteration of culturally and spiritually rich Native nations who have little care for monetary wealth, and the entrapment of the survivors on barren “reservations”. This, however, is the story of a nation, the Osage, driven on to what the white man thought was another patch of dust; but beneath which, it emerged, lay one of the richest oilfields in America. The Osage had an inkling of this, and were wise enough, in their treaty of subjugation, to retain rights to whatever lay below the ground ceded to white man’s law.

The deception and destruction of those people was multilayered. It began with the imposition of the “allotment” system, which crushed the collectivity of Native land ownership. When oil was struck, a system was devised whereby the Native owners of the headrights would lease them to “guardians”, who then set about what became known as “the Indian business” of appropriating the Osage’s rightful wealth.

Some Osage did make millions from their oil headrights, and even though measures were imposed to stop them spending it freely, this wealth was one thing the whites could not abide.

Though Grann does not write like a McCarthy or a McMurtry, you forget sometimes that this is not fiction in their vein

But Grann’s book is not about generalities; it is principally about one matriarchal Osage family, and the devilish plot to murder its womenfolk one by one, in a coldly calculated order, as would gradually bequeath their riches to white speculators in the end by the only viable means: inheritance. And here lies the macabre intimacy that marks this out from other stories of mass killing of American Indians: inheritance, of course, entailed marrying Native women, raising children with them while knowing the plan’s murderous outcome.

Annie - I have never come across anyone else who has read Shibumi. I loved that book and read it several times. I lost my copy and wish I still had it.

I second Louise Penny books starring Inspector Gamache and I do agree to start at the beginning.

Nora Roberts also writes under JD Robb and has a mystery series called ....In Death. It might be lighter than what you want but it is entertaining.

For mysteries try Jonathon Kellerman and Faye Kellerman.

Spy thriller try - Brad Thor, Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn and David Baldacci.

Blfenton...I've read all of the early Trevanian books...Eiger Sanction, Loo Sanction, The Main and Shibumi. There are so many good authors whose books aren't available as ebooks and so many poorly written, poorly edited books that are...such a shame.

I've read his others as well and agree with your statement about so many good books not available as ebooks. His books aren't even available in our local library, only as audio books.

I have read most of the books on Annie's list (all great) but have not read Shibumi. I'll have to put that on my list .

I just finished 'Before the Fall' by Noah Hawley. Read it in just over a day... very engrossing book about a plane crash with a pretty interesting critique of the current method of news reporting. I enjoyed it very much and was sorry to come to the last page.

Have you read Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca lately? I think most read it earlier in life, as I did, but I recently reread it and found it truly a page turner. It is a psychological thriller and one that most women will "get."

I meant to mention that I've found a lot of John Grisham books to be page-turners...

I have also enjoyed books by Lisa See. She writes about the lives of young Chinese women. Her first book, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan tells the story of footbinding in China, fascinating story.

The House on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet (the lives of Japanese Americans as we entered WW2).

The Invention of Wings (Susan Monk Kidd) also wrote The Secret Life of Bees.

The Cormoran Strike novels by J.K. Rowling (written under pseudonym Robert Galbraith) are pretty good since you mentioned thrillers/mysteries.

I love the books by Jussi Olsen Adler. The first of the Department Q novels is "the Keeper of Lost Causes."
