Talk to a local arborist. Aesthetically this is pretty unappealing but the more important question is how structurally sound/unsound it is. These are great trees and you are in sweet spot zone for them. I have many but have never experienced this kind of damage so don't know how well they recover.

Pretty dry in Phoenix & rotting will be slow. I'd just let it be, but if watering, keep the water away from the exposed wood.

From the pictures it doesn't look as lopsided as I feared. I would definately keep it for now and see how the damage develops

since it appears to be right out the front door.. i would be done with it... besides the big gaping wound ... its planted crooked ...

i figure i could do a lot better.. right outside my front door ..

i would put it.. out of MY misery ...

a replacement should be planted.. in the next proper planting season ... and i am going to guess.. its not the heat of summer ...

James, the aesthetics are totally your call. These are great trees and yours has attained some size. If it were me, I would want to see how attractive/unattractive it was once the leaves drop, as a major reason for having these is that incredible bark in winter. I have also learned (the hard way) that it is much easier to prevent these kinds of accidents than try to deal with them once they happen, which means judicious pruning when young. That split trunk, well...it split. Talk to someone who has experienced this with a Parkinsonia, or a local arborist. Also, as you drive around, look at the trunks of other pv's and note how they heal over. If you learn anything of note, I'd love to hear about it, as I'm kind of flying blind with these trees here. Not many people around me have them, although I can't think why not.

Go find some canvas to wrap the lower trunk with, if it's too unsightly. Loosely wrapped in a dry climate it shouldn't do much harm

Never thought about trying to wrap it. Guess I need to do a little research on it. Yeah the canvas would look much nicer. Not sure how long it would last in the 110 degree days we been having.

trees are NOT made to be wrapped in anything.. for the long term ...

everywhere but where you are.. lol .. it would trap moisture.. and be a hiding place for bugs .. some of which would end up detrimental ...

if i cant talk you into removing it ... then see if you can plant another for the future.. when some storm takes you out of the removal equation ...

one thing for sure.. i wouldnt spend a lot of money on it .. invest it for removal.. when it fails ...

Yeah already have a lot of ants of the tree, was wondering the same thing about the bugs hiding in there. I think i am just going to leave it the way it is and prune it up some to ensure the upcoming storms don't rip more of the tree down.

It is astounding what trees can survive. We had a mature maple split in half with an ice storm. I thought the tree was toast. The arborist said to give it a chance, as it was not near any structure. 14 years later, it is growing strong. If you like the tree, give it a chance. Do not wrap anything around it. It just looks like it has character to me.
