Been busy with garden

It's been chilly ... and rainy (the farmers are complaining that it's so late to sow corn), so the garden is behind.

The asparagus has been growing like weeds: need to pick about every two days, now that it's warmed up some.

Much first sowing of regular garden needing doing ... and the slight touch of green that turns into something of a green carpet as the weeds keep growing is progressing apace. That's the time, when they're 1/4 - 1/2" high, to get the rake busy, pushing back and forth, and at an angle when there's room between rows ... which covers way more ground than the cultivator or hoe, and not only faster, but easier, into the bargain.

Some seeded things not coming up well, and I had similar problem last year, but think that the seed's been O.K.

Got a crick in the back, too, which slows me down some, and makes me more careful.

Only one stake (of about 80) yet to drive, and about three strings yet to place.

Nineteen rows about 65 paces long, and eight about 52 paces.

Going home to some lunch ... and more seeding.

I'm glad you had time to let us know how you are with as busy as it sounds like you've been....

I hope you enjoyed some lunch and had a little rest. Please pamper your back as best you can, you don't want that crick to turn into something more.

It's been that kind of week here too. Not vegetable gardening but our wet cool spring has slowed down my own outside work. Now the family that lives in the house below us is having graduation party Sunday for their high achiever son. The hill (mine) leading down to their house and visible from their drive has been wild with weeds, winter debris and I'm trying to get it in shape before their guests. I hope some of these shrubs and ground cover take hold before too many more years, I don't know how much longer I'm going to want to be climbing around on it like a goat ;0) - very steep.

I'm jealous of your asparagus. I looked at it at the grocery store this afternoon and it could have been fresher this week for $2.99/lb. I didn't buy any today even though DH had said how much he enjoyed what we'd had a few days ago.

That's a very good sized garden, OJ! Yes, good luck, I hope the weather is good all summer and you end up with a bountiful harvest.

Are you saying you rake the weeds to one side and cut them down?

Howdy, Have been busy around the gardens this year and now saving seeds. I have an updated list some commercial seed if hybrid, others open pollinated. I am in need of craft gourd seed for next year season other than bottle gourd seed. Take a look and PLMK. That's a beautiful Red-spotted Purple. They commonly lay their eggs on cherry and willow. I've never had the pleasure of raising any but have always thought that they are so pretty. Sometimes I see them on the jelly feeder that I have out for the Baltimore Orioles. I've provided a link below to a thread in which Sherry has posted some photos of some Red-spotted Purples. Chandra, Welcome back. I was wondering what was keeping you too busy to talk about gardening. Your trip sounds like it was wonderful fun. San Antonio is one of my favorite vacation destinations. I am glad your garden is so productive this year. I am happy to hear that the Laura Bush petunias are doing so well for you. Remember that they like to be sheared back hard when their production of flowers starts lagging in mid-summer. I usually cut mine back by about 50% when they start looking tired. Within about two weeks they have rebounded so strongly that you'd never believe I had just cut them back. I look forward to hearing about the latest info on continental drought and tree mortality. If you have anything interesting to share about soil moisture and rapid onset of drought, I hope you'll share that with us too. It astonishes me how quickly some parts of our state can go from nice, moist soil to drought---often just in weeks. I've been busy harvesting and processing and putting in succession plantings too. So far, it is a superb year for the garden, and I am glad! We deserve a great year this year after last summer's horrid drought. Dawn

It's been unseasonably cold and wet here too. Last night the weatherman said it might snow tomorrow (Saturday)! I want to plant the petunias, but today was too cold for the human sissy to go outside.

Sounds like an ambitious garden you have been installing, OJ. Don't work too hard; you don't want that crick to grow into a creak!

Ed, I am jealous that you can garden as you do. We moved to Florida and gardening here is like dealing with heated sand and trying to grow something. Enjoy the fruits (veggies) of your labors.
