Back to the topic... Sir Hans...Thanks for that info. You are right(as always). I have seen a pic of hippeastrums(for cut flower) with scapes and almost no leaves. I think it is in Ludwig's website. "defoliated for hygienical reasons"...How is this so? During winter time, I do not have enough growing area inside that can give my amaryllises enough sunlight. I wish I did. I do not have a greenhouse or indoor grow lights. Again, I wish I did. As much as I want my amaryllises to continously grow all year long, I can not do so. Putting them to dormancy is a MUST for me. This is my plan for this winter. Since the unheated garage is dark, I will have to let the leaves dry out and then cut them. Give them maybe a week or so to dry out a bit and then unpot, dip in fungicide, repot in fresh soil. Water a little bit and mulch to keep moisture in the roots. I have fed them well and given them as much right caring as I know this spring/summer. I think I will be getting a very good performance from them next spring.

In both cases, you can move but be careful because there are often offsets directly attached to the mother bulb that shoot up a sprout away from the mother (where the shoot runs horizontally and then abruptly goes vertical. Also be careful not to accidentally break off the shoot under the soil when digging.

Thanks! There was a fairly heavy frost this morning, though I don't think the temperature got any lower than 32. As I already had three-foot stakes encircling the lilies--to prevent my dog from running over them and breaking them off--I just draped blankets over those stakes. And, as the stakes were still taller than the lilies, that did seem to hold the covers above the leaves. At the moment the lilies look fine, but I'll have to see how they react after the sun shines on them a bit.

Alina -- Gardening in a small space is fun! I'm a city dweller -- the widest point in my backyard is 20 feet. Having only so much space, I think, forces you to be more creative in putting things together, and to be more ruthless and experimental. So many things are trial and error anyhow in gardening. This season alone, I've redesigned my front yard twice, and there's still tweaking to do. I'm sure whatever you end up doing will eventually look fabulous. :) As for the roses, I don't plant the bulbs right up against them (they're about a foot from the base), and I use a soaker hose for watering. The bulbs aren't waterlogged because I wove the hose a couple of inches away from them, so they still get water, just not as much as the roses. Ironically, though, the couple of lilies that ended up on the waterline are taller and thicker than the others. They seem to be very happy. Leslie -- Thank you so much for sharing your combination.
