First time veggie container garden
Comments (11)So do you have a library consortium (interlibrary loan)? My library is part of a 25 library system. I can search and request a book from any of the libraries (for free!). It is delivered to my local library and then I check it out there and return there as well. I do this all the time! I would be lost without it. May be check if you have this option. Else the paper back version of the book isn't too much I think less than $20. Good luck! PS I only grow tomatoes and chile peppers in containers. Nothing like taste of home grown tomatoes. I have grown eggplants (small asian types) and peppers before also....See MoreMy First Veggie Garden - Help?
Comments (7)You will need to judge the watering needs according to how your plants are growing and responding and how the soil feels to you (physically). Personally, I believe in watering deeply, but less frequently....but the number of times per week will depend entirely upon the time of year, amount of sunlight, maturity of the crop, and the temperature. We can't tell you how often...that depends upon the conditions that YOU have. Just make sure that when you do water, it's for a long enough time to actually get down into the root system, not just dampen the top. The straw is to keep weeds down and preserve soil moisture, prevent water and wind erosion, aide in water percolation, etc. I'd put it everywhere....See MoreMy first boxed veggie garden

Comments (6)Beets, celery, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, spinach, leeks... Definitely not getting six hours of sun. I feel silly for not assessing the sun before going ahead and planting them there!! We have had a few warm days recently, around 75 Fahrenheit. But it's also been raining and grey on and off. We are in the far north of nz... Whangarei to be exact. A nice sunny and hot summer region. There are trees from next door blocking the sun which unfortunately I can't do anything about. Quite large, well established trees....See Morestrawberrysuede
