Help! Is my maple tree dead?

Hi there. Four years ago (May 2013) I bought two "Autumn Blaze" (Acer x freemanii 'Jeffersred') Maples from a local nursery and had them professionally planted about 30 ft. apart in our suburban back yard. They seemed to take to their new home and get established nicely, and both grew significantly each year. Last fall they were both beautiful and healthy-looking—around 20 ft. tall.

Sadly, this spring, one of them budded and leafed out like normal, and the other didn't leaf at all. I'd think it is completely dead except for the fact that it is now sprouting a few new sprigs/leaves directly out of the trunk, right at the junction where the trunk first starts to branch. There are basically no leaves on the canopy.

Any idea what could have happened? Why would this tree “die” while it's brother is just fine? Is it salvageable? Anything I can do to help it?

My wife and I are super bummed, as we bought these trees for our kids—one for each—so they could grow together. Our daughter is sad that "her tree" is dead. :(

Well, it's certainly not 'dead' - it wouldn't be producing ANY leaves if that were the case - but it is definitely stressed for some reason to cause that top die back.

There looks to be patches of 'wet' on the bark......is that what that discoloration is? Is it sticky at all? How were the trees presented when they were planted - balled and burlapped? In a wire cage? Were you present when they were planted and what happened to the rootballs.......was all wrapping material removed? Can you post a close up photo of the trunk as it enters the soil? Can you provide any details about the planting......, what kind of soil you have, how big the planting hole was, any amending, etc. The more information you can provide, the better the chances are we can narrow down what the problem might be.

Hi gardengal48, thanks for the reply. The wet bark is because I'd just sprayed it with the hose while watering our herb garden a few minutes before I took the photos.

When the trees were planted in May 2013 they were brought burlapped ... and that was removed when they put it in the hole.

They amended the soil with Mycorrhizal fungi which you can kind of see in this photo:

I think it was probably this stuff.

Keep in mind that was all 4 years ago. The tree seemed to establish easily and well, and grew beautifully. By last September (2016) it looked great:

And it continued that way through October 2016 when it dropped all its leaves:

But this Spring was a different story. The other maple that was planted at the same time leafed out nicely, and this one did not.

Something definitely must've happened over the winter. Sorry I don't have a better photo of the trunk at the moment ...

Thanks again for any thoughts you might have about cause, and potentially saving the tree.

How does the top look? That wound looks like it was from last year. The wood is weathered grey and the callus tissue has begun to heal over. Maybe a buck rub, maybe a frost crack..., in any case it looks nasty but if the top looks healthy it will probably eventually (after a few years) heal over. Do not apply any paint or pruning sealer or anything. If the top is showing signs of stress, such as branches dying back, I would probably just replace it, especially if it is a specimen tree in your yard.

i dont know whats wrong with it... but get rid of it ... i dont understand the twisty trunk ... and since maples dont suckers that much.. if those are suckers of this tree... down at soil level.. its a good indication... major problems are up above ... looks like you have a large piece of yard... i would just cut it flush.. apply stump killer .... and be done with it.. its not like you need to replant in that exact spot ... what you save in grinding it out.. will pay for the new tree ... in replacing.. i wouldnt go much beyond a 6 footer ... and i would target the next planting season.. and for most of the US.. its not august ... see link for how to plant it ... ken https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub

Doesn't look very good at all. Can you detect any buds on the stems? If the tree is alive and even moderately healthy, you should see next season's leaf buds forming on the all the terminal stems and twigs. btw, you might want to post more plant specific questions - like this maple query - on other forums, as this one is extremely quiet and seldom gets much action. The Maples forum is pretty lively in comparison :-) This forum is more suited to issues regarding the philosophy behind Japanese gardens and their design than specific plant questions.

I'd bet the suckers are likely still Autumn Blaze. It seems most of the large bare root suppliers these days market their Blaze (and other Freeman hybrids) as having been grown on their own root. If you are patient and the tree has a good healthy root system under it, a sucker shoot on a fast growing tree like Autumn Blaze could grow relatively quickly into the same size tree top you just lost. Maybe 3 or 4 years optimistically, I'd guess. You would want to trim it down to one sucker, of course, and carefully cut the dead tree top off right above the living tissue area. It would require some pruning along the way as young Blaze can get "leggy" if they grow too fast. If all of this is something that you think would be too much of a hassle or you would not be comfortable with, then you should consider just removing the tree, roots and all, and replacing it with a new one.

What's going on at the base there?

It looks like it has been beaten with a weedeater repeatedly.

If there is that sort of damage all the way around then we have our answer.

Not sure why the trunk is splitting like that ... it's never been touched with a weed eater or mower.
