Patio Umbrella Choices For Blocking Sun
Comments (6)I watched the Umbrella Video and noticed it didn't show the block of shade cast. So it probably works only at high noon in midsummer and if it's positioned right over the chair or chaise. Not very useful. And when you add in the wind issue (our good 8 ft. umbrella goes over, heavy stand and all, when a good gust comes along), it's not worth the price. I looked at those RV awnings that run down the length of the trailer and had one installed over my deck along the house wall. Pulls out 8 ft. and it's 16 ft. long and very sturdy and stable (more stable than the pullout awnings made for house decks -- go online and look up "RV awnings"). Easier to move your chair to its shade than to crank down the wheels on the umbrellamobile and drag it around. Carol...See MoreHow do you install sleeves for umbrellas in a paver patio?
Comments (5)Golfgeek and SS- Thank you for your answers. I'll check with my hardscaper. Hopefully he is fully familiar with installation of umbrella sleeves as gg said. I've become used to having to do my own research and telling my contractors what needs to be done. I find the knowledge of some contractors or at least their preferences quite variable, even ones that are otherwise competent and come highly recommended....See MoreMosquito Net Cover For Patio Umbrella: What Do you Think? Comments (15)Good points, all! I agree, the price is too high for anyone who can sew a straight seam. I, at least, can do that much. Great idea abut finding a good price online, Bodica. Thanks! Your idea about using velcro is a good one, too, Threegrad! That stuff is a godsend to people like me who love to design, but hate to sew. ROFLMAO Carole! But, you make a good point about trying to sew that stuff. I still have nightmares about sewing a chenille pillow for my DD! Squirrelheaven: thank you :~) Good point about obscuring the view with netting. Hmmmmm Jen, I've always wondered what it would be like sleeping with mosquito netting on beds. I hadn't even considered air circulation! My walled garden can get pretty hot during the summer. This is something I really need to think about. Thanks for mentioning it. Polly & Cooperbailey, yikes . . . those mosquitos sound horrid! I feel for you both. I don't get bitten very often when we're vacationing in Michigan, but my DH and kids get big welts from them. Well, again, thanks for all your thoughts on this thing. You've given me a lot to think about. If I do decide to try one, I'll be making my own. I'm too frugal to spend that much for one myself. Comments (7)There is some geometry involved in figuring this out, as I think it would depend on which way the sun hits the space at the times you would most need shade, and where an umbrella could be placed. I have a very fair skinned grandson toddler and in order to let him play out in my garden in the summer midday, we needed some shade over his sandbox and water table area. I bought a wonderful 9' umbrella from Costco (online delivered for free) that tilts, if needed, and provides a great deal of shade (more than you would think, for its size, but they also have an 11'). It's Sunbrella fabric; the whole thing is wonderful quality. I also bought the stand from them. It's heavy, but I can woman-handle it myself to different areas if I need to. And if it doesn't work for you, Costco has a great return policy. Here is a link that might be useful: The one I bought...See Morelovemrmewey
