Guys-you are all missing the big point about trees
Comments (20)They grow like weeds around here. They fall easily when the hurricanes hit. One almost fell on the play yard. They grow sooooooo tall and I'm not sure how much oxygen they actually produce with pine needles atm just the tops of their trunk. They're fine in a forest setting but totally a waste in the backyard. There are some old neighborhoods(probably from the 70's) around here that removed just enough to build the house so the whole neighborhood is nestled inside a forest. It's a very cozy bird haven BUT dark and not much grows in their yards, definitely not enough light for roses. Their yards are usually covered with pine needles. We use them for mulch on the beds but I wouldn't want them all over the lawn. I'm sure it feels like a dungeon inside those houses. I need sunlight to get up in the morning. I think it's o.k. clear the lot before you build your house and then selectively plant oxygen producing trees which won't fall on the house....See MoreMaybe you guys can give me some advice on....
Comments (11)Raggedyann, I'm feeling bonded with you already. I too love Irises and Hostas, and now am looking to get a few, just a few, daylilies. How can this happen? I only have a little space left, and am getting up there in years and cannot do as much as I used to, but I sure would love some daylilies. Where can I find out what they need as far as light and soil requirements, also what zones are they hardy in? I guess I need to do some research before I buy any. I have 2 Stella's that are HUGE and need dividing. Don't know what I'd do with the leftovers, and it kills me to throw away good plants. What do I do?...See Moreany ideas on who this big guy is?
Comments (10)It's tough to distinguish between Elegans and Blue Mammoth and this "big guy" could certainly be either but the leaves look rounder to me, more like my Big Daddy than the other two. You will likely never know for sure ... Wayne BIG DADDY...See MoreThese guys big enough to move out of the seed tray?
Comments (21)I've just moved most of my seedlings into very similar containers myself. I sowed 2 seeds in each cell, but almost all of them sprouted and I didn't have the heart to cull anyone yet (still lots of time for various plagues to hit my plants), so I've separated and potted all of them. I found that it helps to let the seedlings dry out before separating them, as it makes it a lot easier to pull them apart without damaging the roots. I also intentionally sowed most of the seeds a bit apart as I suspected I would not be able to bring myself to killing the sweet little guys :) My only problem now is that a few of the plants have grown quite a bit, and also got a little leggy under my initially poor lighting, so now they're too tall for the cups. I think I'll just pot those guys in some Yoghurt containers or something. FTR, I "buried" all my seedlings all the way up to the cotyledons, sometimes putting 2" of stem under dirt. Every single seedling are still doing very fine, I'd even say they're growing faster after I moved them into separate pots (also beefed up the lighting in the process - 5 30W CFLs now)....See Morezkathy z7a NC
