I would like to start a coastal cottage garden, is this possible?
Comments (18)Hi again Barbra. I see from your list that you are getting lots of annuals. That's very cottagy but where you live your garden could be all year round so I personally would also get into perennials and, as I said, some shrubs. A 'real' cottage garden would be full of a mixture of plants, not just annuals. By their very nature cottage gardens were eclectic and had to be easy care. Permanent plantings will help that. You could also be getting some summer flowering bulbs like Crocosmias and the little Gladiolus nanus cultivars. Crocosmias have run riot around our coasts. They thrive in mild, well drained, sunny ground and there are some lovely ones which are less rampant the the standard 'Montbretia'. Another two bulbs which love the sun and will flower in November are Schizostylus and Nerine bowdenii. Both will take an occasional light freeze. Also there are the Mediterranean herbs, rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme and bay which would be perfectly happy in a seaside location. They can take heat, drought and salt. I am quite excited with this project. The opportunities are endless. Even before you start thinking about 'nautical' featues like drift wood, rope handrails, pebble edgings, boat seats in shelters, etc. I'd love to be doing myself! Here is a link that might be useful: Boat seat...See MoreHeads Up to Everybody on the Atlantic Seaboard & the Gulf Coast
Comments (51)Linda, there are other ways to lose your livelihood other than being a commercial fisherman should a storm take out several thousand recreational boats here in my town. Many ways. Just a few from the top of my head...marine mechanics, shipwrights, fiberglass specialists, electronics sales/installation/service, rigging specialists, canvas specialties (several types), upholstery specialists, stainless steel fabricators, crane owners & operators, marina owners, dockmasters, deck hands, fuel, pump-out service companies, painters, those who do the shrink-wrapping for winter storage, Tow Boat US franchise owners & their employees, places like West Marine & the marine salvage yard suffer from greatly reduced sales when the boats are not being used, restaurants & their employees (if boaters are not using their boats they aren't in town needing food), hotels, caterers (we have many very large yachts here all summer. They come up from the Caribbean to, hopefully, avoid hurricanes & utilize local caterers every week.), & retail in general. Boaters' purchases are the mainstay of our downtown area. Recreational boating is big business in the Great Lakes area also as it is all along the country's coasts (west, Gulf, & east). People earn their livelihoods in other ways besides farming. And those other livelihoods also ripple through the entire economy. Despite their farms the mid-west is suffering economically right now. So are Connecticut & Rhode Island. IMO, every job we have in America is important...not just farmers. My town lives or dies by the health of our local marine industries that includes oyster bed farmers, scallop divers, commercial fisherman (Stonington, our government jurisdiction, has the last commercial fishing fleet in CT.), sport fishing charter boats, & yes...recreational boaters and all those who support the marine industry that I noted above. The world's largest marine museum is located in Mystic for a reason. As I've said before, Mystic's life blood is the sea....See MoreMixing light brown flooring w/white cabinetry--other shades??
Comments (5)I don't know how large of an accent area you are speaking of, but mother of pearl tile comes in almost pure white to beiges and tan, to hues of blue. My bathroom remodel is about to get underway. It is all ordered and demo date set. It's mostly Torreon Travertine, My sinks, tub, baseboards and doors are white. I am adding a mother of pearl tiny brick laid tile to the face of my built in shower bench. It is white with tan. I bought samples from Tilebar.com I chose mini brick oyster white. You can read the reviews and see photos of the customers who used the product. We ordered several color samples of the pearl tile and chose this one for our project. It runs $17.99 a sf sheet. Comments (8)We have an interior designer (and the architect is capable and frequently used by our builder, but he is not helpful with providing style ideas) Then find a real architect. If your "architect" can't provide ideas and only draws what you tell him, he's not an architect. He's a draftsman. My builder called our draftsman an architect until I corrected him....See MoreOutsidePlaying
