That sounds like it could be root rot to me... from watering too much. Hard to say from just this description tho... But if you were letting the soil dry between waterings, you should have been fine with root rot. Are you using a well-draining soil, I wonder? If it is root rot, Im sorry. That's one thing that is really hard to recover from. "I have some bamboo that was near it, and the bamboo is fine." Your bamboo is probably "lucky bamboo" with isn't bamboo at all but water rooted dracaena. Dracaena will survive in a box in a closet in a basement. i.e. they do fine without light so... probably not a good yardstick for other varieties of plant.

I'm sorry to hear that! A 'money tree' (grown from a leaf) was one of my first plants, and I love their vigor, their color, their trunks, and their large leaves. Early this spring, before the outside trees had put out their leaves, I foolishly left my pachira on the deck and it took a terrible sun-burning. I lost almost all the leaves - the rest of the leaves shriveled after new leaves began to appear. Fortunately, the plant did not die; but, rather, it spurted growth from the top. If your plant does survive, it'll look more like a 'tree' than a bush. But you probably wouldn't mind that too much. The type of pachira that I have doesn't like to sit in water, although it likes to be watered. Without leaves, your plant won't be doing much evapo-transpiration, or whatever it's called. The roots will still take water, if they're alive, but they won't need much. So, here's what I'd do, in hope of a healthy return: Let the soil become semi-dry, if it's moist right now. Place the plant in an east or south-east facing window, if you have one. Essentially, give the plant as much light as you can. The good news is that these plants are vigorous, and if there is still life in there, you should know in a reasonably short amount of time. Keep your eyes peeled for new leaflets. Very good advice as above. Also make sure it has adequate drainage, if it is merely "sitting" in that saucer it might be sitting in water after waterings. Raise the pot up a little - a few bottletops or level pebbles will do. Even if it loses all its leaves, it WILL re-shoot new leaves and in time you will never even know it had a bad spell. I promise.

It's hard to say for sure but I'd probably put a stake in the pot and tie it to that. Maybe a little pruning. Doesn't look like it'll make it though- sorry. I don't think mine lasted that long either.
