Hi Harv, You must prune off the reverting branches on your maple. They'll grow more vigorously than the variegated branches, and it's best to cut them off as soon as possible. I have to do this every year on my A. campestre 'Carnival'. You have such a lovely garden! It's a treat to see your large specimens, and everything works together so nicely. The best way to cut costs is to build an efficiently laid out house. I've been in smaller houses that lived better than larger homes where square footage was wasted space.

Does your garden always look this good or has it been an exceptional spring? It's the latter for me. Very cool spring with abundant moisture. No late freezes, so the cooler, wet spring has resulted in a lush landscape. Have you tried Bosnian Pine? I'm z4 as well, but likely a bit different than your z4. Much to my chagrin, it has not been a stellar performer for me, and I'm curious how it has done for you...if you're growing it...
