Name That Plant!

Some kind of buttercup? And one other: S.E. MI z5

Plant 1: I think it's safe to assume these are some kind of Ranunculus but I'd love to know for sure which one. I can't decide if the leaves quite match Ranunculus acris.

Plant 2: Also, any ideas on what this fuzzy little plant is? It was difficult to get a good photo but I think some of those narrow leaves belong to it. If so, maybe it's a low-growing grass but I haven't seen grass grow quite like this.

The second photo is one of the Carex species. Although there are many similar-looking options, C. typhina has similar leaves and a low growth pattern like the one shown in your photo. It is also native in your area.

Possibly Ranunculus acris.

I checked several resources, and this does appear to be Miscanthus. Saccharum has a central inflorescence axis that is much longer than the branches. Its spikelets shed in pairs, along with joints of the inflorescence axis. Miscanthus has a central inflorescence axis that is shorter than the branches. My first thought was a weevil, too, but I couldn't find a picture of any with a snout quite like this one.

It certainly looks like it. I don’t know of another name or cultivar. Some plants that start out with more variegation will be more green later in the season. I don’t know if Hydrophyllum is one since I have only seen it in spring. Did you realized that there is a very active plant ID forumcalled Name that Plant here on Houzz and Gardenweb? You will get answers much quicker there, and if you repost there may get more information than I was able to give you. Name that Plant

There were flowering plants there in the past, before the herbivores found them. It's a good thing, because they can't spread any further if they can't make seeds. The BONAP map shows them in Ohio, but not Michigan, so they are on the move northward. Shade might be affecting the flowering too? Sylvestris smells like parsley. Caucalis smells like licorice, but the internet doesn't have much info about caucalis, because sylvestris gets all the attention.

Thank you, peren.all. I wasn't sure the leaves quite matched R. acris but I know leaves often change with age so you can't always expect that photos will exactly represent what you have.

Thank you, jekeesl (south-central Arkansas). I don't think there's any doubt that you are right about plant 2 being a sedge. I promptly went to a wild plant site and searched through a list of--I don't know, maybe 10 million--species of sedge that grow in Michigan and narrowed it down to two that grow in Lenawee County that, to me, look similar: Carex hystericina and Carex frankii. C. typhina wasn't said to grow in this county but it does grow in the county next door and it looks very similar.

Yes, Carex species are difficult (sometimes impossible) to identify from photos. I am not familiar with C. frankii, but that one looks very similar to the plants in your photos.
