Would you want to know.....

Long story short, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor 4 years ago after taking a visual field test at my optometrist's office. It was clear from the printout, with a part of the picture totally black, that there was something wrong. My first reaction was to ask if it could be a brain tumor? My doctor said, "let's not go there." But what I need you do is see a neuro-ophthalmologist I went through all the channels, was operated on and am fine today.

Fast forward to today. I was having my annual visit with the partner of my original doctor. It is very unusual to find a brain tumor while doing the visual field and this is now their second one. They handled it the same as with me, did not come out and say that this is could be a brain tumor. The women did not want to hear anything and left the office. The doctor sent her a registered letter stating that they feel she should see a neuro-ophthalmologist because of their findings.

She asked my opinion. I think a patient has the right to know everything across the board. The one certain is that if you get results like this in this test, it is something! It could be vascular, but more often a tumor.

So a few questions: would you want to know the worse case scenario? Do other doctors have a protocol for this?

My advice was to tell the patient that when these findings are found, it something has to be looked at. It could be vascular or it could be a tumor. You want to make it clear that the person needs to go to the next level.
