Thyme

We are having our steeply sloped yard landscaped. The steepest parts will have two 3' high stone walls, with lawn at the top and at the bottom. We were thinking of planting thyme in the space between the walls, but the landscaper said that thyme seed was too expensive - $100/lb and his supplier's minimum is 25 pounds. Is this price reasonable? If so, is there is a place where I can buy less. The area I want in thyme is about 3' x 50 feet, so I don't think I need anywhere near 25 pounds. The local hardware/garden store sells thyme plants for $4.00 each so if I plant them 1 foot apart, then I would need 100 plants. Is that a proper density? Also, they have three types: English thyme, German thyme, and lemon thyme. Which should I get?

This property is in northern NY, along the Champlain Valley
