Need help with my succulent plant

I have a small succulent plant that I have had since about October. During the winter some of the leaves on the plant began to die and fall off, however not all of the leaves. Now that the weather is getting warmer I see new growth coming at the bottom of the plant.

I am noticing that some of the original leaves are still dieing off as the new growth comes in. I am wondering if I should somehow separate the top portion of the plant and give it it's own pot and let the new growth start a new plant.

You could behead it, but you don't have to. Either way is OK, and original plant and new offsets will grow. You may want to behead original plant since the stem is getting longer, but if you leave it will not interfere with new growth.

If I may ask: is it a glass or plastic cup/glass the plant is potted in? Does it have drainage hole(s)? Soil looks quite wet to me too, and not quite enough free draining. Excess leaf drop could be from too much water. Old leaves eventually dry up and fall off, it just shouldn't be too many at the same time.

This plant is in a small plastic cup which doesn't have much drainage. I may have started to water the plant too much based off of a few articles I just read so I will cut back on that as well.

I would suggest a smaller terracotta pot (this would be temporary). keep the mix slightly moist and use a plastic bag over top of the plant (propped up by sticks or something similar, so that the plastic bag is not touching the plant) don't tie the bag closed so there is some fresh air. I would also remove the bag periodically (every few days or so) and leave it off for a few hours. The point of the bag is to increase the amount of humidity, removing the bag gives you the opportunity to check the soil and make sure the plant is not getting worse and allows the plant to get fresh air. You want to place this plant in its "mini Greenhouse" in a bright (but no direct sun) position and keep the plant as warm as is possible. Good Luck Fred

zarah Your containers are cute and good that you made sure about drainage holes - how many holes? - you could poke few just to make sure. Are they some kind of plastic? I would point out that with your humid climate you need to make sure about good air flow besides the drainage. I think your plants are planted little deep - especially ones in oblong containers. If you could make sure they are sitting higher, the air circulation would be better. The container should be filled to just touch below the rim. There isn't that much space in your individual pots to raise the level of mix since the handles have openings, perhaps just a little mounding in the middle would help. And what did you use for topping - is that rice husks? It looks pretty good, but I don't know anything about their water retention - but have seen them mentioned few times.If you think they hold water for too long, maybe a pebbles/stones could be used for top dressing, they could be bigger than what you use in the mix itself. The little 'stones' you mentioned that you buy along the road - are they the white particles visible in few photos? (the white granules - they look almost like perlite) - if yes, I think that's good sized grit. Rina

Typically, if plants are not doing that well, it is important to give them better conditions...waiting for them to do OK in problematic conditions is hardly going to help. You may not have plants to repot, or - at best - they will stay just so-so. Your plants will definitely improve in better conditions first... Some browning s expected on tiny leaves on stolons, but not too much and not the lowest leaves (until they get old). They could also be drying up from being thirsty. But I am not going to recommend for you to water them more unless I am sure there is good drainage - and that goes for the container (drainage holes) and the potting mix. Leaves seem to curl 'under', and that could be also because of lack of adequate watering and/or insufficient light.Mix that is too organic isn't most suitable for succulents. They are genetically programmed to grow in 'lean' substrates - mostly rock. And Semps should grow outdoors year-round, they are very hardy plants. But indoors or out, they will suffer if grown in water retaining soils.

It looks fine to me as long as there are holes in that container. They take very dry conditions.

I would strongly recommend better mix and container with drainage hole(s). Not watering - if the mix is water retaining - is not an answer, succulents need to be watered too. But if they sit in wet soil for extended periods of time, they will suffer. These are basics that could make difference between your plant growing well or plant slowly declining. You don't have to take my word for it - go over to Cacti & Succulents forum and read some posts there...
