redland orchid festival...anyone?

coming up next weekend. It has evolved to be one of the best shows in the USA.

It is much better than the Miami show ever was, except for the air conditioning

Great opportunity for species seekers and all orchid types. Many vendors from all over the world. Great chance to discuss any orchid related issue with real growers (as opposed to "plant brokers"). Many lectures, usually amazing displays and awarded plants on display. As there many growers nearby, you will see more "specimen" sized plants as they do not have to schlep them very far. For bargain seekers, usually far away growers with pants leftover will mark them down at end of show (last 2-3 hours).

Bring sun protection, a cart with wheels and a screen cover. It is always hot and sometimes muggy, the fruit and spice park will have the ripe lychee trees full of fruit cordoned off, I believe that lychee thieves will be shot on site... LOL...

Orchid supplies and other related stuff, bring phone or camera as lots of photo opportunities.

If you have never been to a BIG TIME orchid event... this is it

Admission is $10, I will embark on this 800 miles round trip to visit and possibly buy a couple of plants, more so for the camaraderie and to maybe re-ignite the orchid fever...

Would so love to hit that show, but would be too expensive between travel expenses, food, and lodging.

Not going this year but will regret it. Many Orchid Societies, including mine, arrange low cost buses to bring you there. Its great. $25.00 plus stop for lunch and the price includes admission to the show. From my area, Sarasota, Florida it takes about 4 hrs.

Then you get 8 hrs to shop and the bus has the large cargo area to put all your plants for the ride back.

Truly the best show because growers come from all over the world.

Hey CJ, if it helps, we haven't had any smoke here since late last week. Prior to that there was a continuous "fog" (beyond annoying). Hopefully the smoke and closed road conditions have improved, especially after all that rain yesterday. Paul had been up in Daytona and down to Melbourne (95)several times last week and didn't run into closed roads or hazardous roads due to smoke, even when there was a lot of smoke here (NE. of Orlando). I haven't seen the news, but maybe once out of the panhandle, it won't be an issue any longer. I hate that I'm not going to get to meet anyone, especially since I'm 99% sure next year is out.

This is a great show for all levels of skill or lack therof. A few favorites are fred Clarke (Sunset Valley Orchids)and Leonard Gines (Gines orchids in HI) for new and growable orchids. Plantio La Orquidea (Rafael and Tina Romero and Ty) for species. They are from Venezuela but live in Sarasota. Kogachi Orchids (HI) just does a good job with everything. We bought dens for our daughter's wedding from him and they were the most beautiful orchids I have ever bought. I'm missing some I know, but just go see for yourself.

Gosh, I was just thinking about this- planning to email one of my local buddy to see if we should go down there. Hamlyn orchid is not listed as a vendor and I am bummed about it. Have my son's b'day parte on that Sunday- was contemplating about going on Friday. If you guys are -planning to meet Friday I am game for it!

Ah, one of my pals ordered a couple of eldorado flamea x flamea - I am not much of a cattleya enthusiast. I *am* a big fan of catasetinae and dendrobium species, so was forced to order: Pleurothallis sonderiana Catasetum fimbriatum " spitzii " sanguineum Dendrobium chrysotoxum Ctsm (pileatum x spitzii "sanguineum") Generally I prefer species, but the pileatum and spitzii cross sounds like it could be dazzling. Jane, lots of buses at this event from all over Florida and am sure there are some from outside Florida.... It is a long ride. Buses are probably the best option if you do not want to drive and or stay a day or two. Hotel rooms hard to come by near the event...

I know. I've gone before. The buses pick you up at 7am and bring you back the same day by 5pm. Lots of fun.

Well, am back from festival and it was well worth the 800 miles driven, got to stay with friends and that was great.... A few pictures to show a bit of what was there, first two pics of a vanda vendor wiith tons of big blooming plants .. awesome stuff, prices ranged from $40-$100... more to come

from the awards tent and let me preface that although the plants are beeuutiful the lighting sucks and it is hard to take quality photos regardless of what device you use.

Frst pic is of the most beautiful yellow flat vanda that I have ever seen, the picture does not begin to do the plant justice, it had 3 flower spikes and lots of great flowers.

brassavola nodosa "largo",

this is one of the nicer nodosa clones. I had several nodosa plants that had this plant as a pod parent and they were very nice.

My favorite nodosa cross so far is the "largo X susan fuchs" cross.

I spoke to 2 growers about this plant and they were surprised that id did not have even a tinge of green as many nodosa's do. Looks like they (AOS, RHS) are splitting the nodosa group into a straight nodosa and a grandiflora (large flower) separate group, courtesy of AOS and RHS.

For nodosa-phyles, I saw Whimsy orchids had a nodosa "godzlla" clone available(not blooming) and they had a comparison picture with susan Fuchs FCC and the Godzilla was much larger.... available at $100 for an established 6 inch pot, the susan fuchs clone was also available for $100.

If anyone is interested in the old Jones& Scully line of "orchidglade" clones, WHimsy is your best option for hard to find plants. Owner of Whimsy Bill Peters used to be the Jones and Scully grower way back when, before their Benlate disaster.... little pricey, but hey.... "this is the business we have chosen"... anyone know this line?

Brassavola Digbyana, nice sized plant, nothing spectacular, I had given a former neighbor one and planted in the fork of a tree in front of his house that grew much bigger than this. This is an easy plant to grow into a specimen IF placed in the right spot. The fork of two branches in an open canopy tree, where it gets full sun. The Honduras national flower, t grows wild there in many orange groves and is the source of all the cattleya's frilly lips. Many BLC plants owe at least part of the B genetic portion to this plant.

Of note is that each new growth produces one flower only, this plant LOVES full sun, cannot burn it...
