What is best security plant that will grow up my fence?

-Heavy shade.

-Georgia hardiness zone 8a.

-Needs to be attractive.

-Needs some serious thorns to keep out the zombies.

-I do not like holly, blackberry, or firethorn.

-Bouganvillia would be perfect but won't grow in 8a.

-Creeping catsclaw is crazy invasive.

-A native Georgia plant would be a bonus.

-I would rather something that will attach to the fence and grow up it rather than a bush.

climbing roses has thorns and flowers, but no good for winter since they shed all of flowers and leaves. blackberry raspberry you can try with fruit as a bonus.

Hmmm....I probably wouldn't look to vines as a permanent solution, but maybe as a temporary solution while other shrubs are growing? I'm no vine expert, so can't really advise too much, but can say that morning glories grow pretty big in one season. Otoh, some of them self-seed a lot - it seems like people have varying luck as to whether it is annoying or not. Clematis are gorgeous, but take a few years to get established. I'm not sure how much they die back over the winter, either. I'm hoping eventually to plant some with some climbing roses, actually. I like climbing hydrangeas (a recent discovery, on my part!) but eventually they get pretty huge. (I was considering one for the front of my house, but decided against it since it would be a maintenance issue for painting.) Btw, I finally met my neighbor who put up the chainlink fence to the back of our yard. She's planning to do some sort of evergreens on her side eventually, so I didn't mention planting vines, for now...

I think I might go for the bush varieties then and save the fence for the cucumbers and butternut squash. I haven't grown sweet potatoes in years, but when I did I remember it got pretty out of hand with all the vines (but they were pretty vines). I'll be on the lookout for bush varieties. My garden can get pretty messy come summer with everything growing out of their nice neat little beds and turning into a great big tangled jungle, so I might as well not make it harder on myself. :-) Thanks for the tips.

I would definitely go with the picket fence(the negative curve one is lovely too), I think it fits with the rest of the atmosphere and would keep your gorgeous pup in. I just have to say, I absolutely LOVE your garden, its just beautiful. May I ask what flowers are spilling out of the window box in the second picture of your very first post? I've been looking for something just like that for my window box and nothing has seemed to fit the bill, TIA!

Not all perennial vines form thickets of dead branches, although any of the Jasmines such as J. polyanthum are notorious for this. Morning Glory tends to be perennial along the coast, and this is also a rampant grower that does build up dead branches. Easier to control vines such as slower growing Trachelospermum jasminoides or Gelsemium sempervirens are less prone to need heavy pruning, and another very colorful and easy vine is Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Dream'. Clytostoma callistegioides is also manageable and blooms in late spring. If you wanted something less woody, there are lots of shorter lived herbaceous vines such as Mina lobata, Rhodochiton astrosanguineum, Senecio confusus, that would thrive on the coast with drip irrigation. Planting annual vines in a perfect climate such as Santa Monica seems like more work to me that planting a more restrained evergreen vine, and shearing it once or twice a year to control. Besides, with a zone 10 climate, there is no need to look at a bare fence in any season.

I like Daphne's idea of blackberries and roses, but I think the shade would dampen them. Smilax spp, i.e., Cats claw is aggressive and it has teeth and tolerates shade. it is a native plant and the fresh shoots in spring are edible. And it has to be the cheapest option, but I spend most of my time trying to get rid of it. I have a clump of Japanese bitter orange, Poncirus trifoliata, it is a bush. There is a clump of it that grows in my back woods, so it manages heavy shade. I'm sure you could hedge trim that against the fence and it would grow along the fence. The spines on that plant are crazy. But you have a nice citrus smelling flower and a small orange looking fruit. I don't know how fast or slow it grows. It is used as a root stuck for citrus trees to impart cold hardiness.
