Cowbirds

Our spring migration always brings a few Brown head cowbirds.Watching the the past few years it appears they hatch their own young as they come to the feeders with them seem to look out for them.Am I out to lunch or do they only some times lay in other birds nests?

It's my understanding that they always lay in other birds' nests. As I mentioned in the other cow bird thread, maybe their behavior might change, since there aren't many buffalo herds to follow anymore. I had never thought about that.......will their behavior change in this changing world? I wonder if they even know how to make a nest?

Yes,it appears perhaps this is a changing phenomenon .As it is the second year this caught my attention.Will keep an eye out and report my observations.

They are certainly not one of my favorites. They're also notorious for parasitic brooding. We've had them for a month now, and they'll move on in another month or so.

I KNOW I would get rid of them immediately. Without a doubt. I've seen enough of warblers and others caring for these monsters while their babies die of starvation and neglect.

Well, we did eventually. We left it for a few days, hoping the cowbirds would move on. We shook it first so there would be no chance of it hatching. But as the days went on, I was afraid it would hatch and that would mean the end of the four phoebe chicks' hopes for survival. However, the four chicks hatched (after we removed the cowbird egg), two one day, and two the next. Both days, the newly hatched chicks simply vanished from the nest. Is that the cowbird? (We still see them around the yard.) The phoebes are constructing a new nest on the other end of the door lintel as I write this. They are going to try again... I wish I had a solution to the cowbird dilemma! I am wondering if the two (nearly identical) nests will somehow provide some (decoy) protection this time? How smart are cowbirds anyway?!!
