Name That Plant!

Taking Over the Herb Garden

We recently moved into a home with a number of great raised beds. The perennial herb garden has been almost completely taken over by this plant. It smells a bit like wild sage and seems to produce small flowers. It has spread outside of the bed as well and is currently growing along the paths between. It seems to have a large root cluster as well. Thanks.

Artemisia vulgaris I believe.

I'm not so sure, peren.all; those leaves aren't quite right, and I never saw a flower in all the time I was fighting mugwort. Could it be a tansy?

Why can't you talk to your neighbor? Seems like the first course of action. If you insist on taking action without talking to the neighbor, it would be perfectly reasonable to remove the bamboo from you side of the fence. Digging them out is not easy but if you don't they *will* continue to spread throughout your whole garden. Even after being dug out, the will return regularly from the mother plant on the other side of the fence. This should be your neighbor's resposibility but... oh well. Installing a barrier is another possibility... but you really ought to bring this problem to your neighbor's attention.

Unless your just wanting to make pesto, avoid the nuts. I use pine nuts, but they are partially roasted and chopped fine when searving the pesto. If you want to seson other things like tomato sauces and such, you would not need any nuts. Even for that, if you have a lot of garlic finly chop that with the basil and feeze. I would not use too much water to making the mixture, but add enough to make it like a soft paste.

I intentionally planted this as well and seriously regret it. However, I have planted other things that are invasive and don't respond to round up. They are a bigger issue. This does respond to round up. I know this is not always the acceptable answer for those that do not like chemicals, but round up does kill it. Even with round up it takes years. Use round up on a paint brush with latex gloves and hand paint the leaves carefully.

For mounds, I understand your point. But mounds usually take a larger width to allow for that gradual sloping down. I have a very narrow strip to work with. So if you were forced into using sharp vertical walls to contain the raised bed, with the bottom open to the native soil, how wide and tall would you make it for Pittosporum Tobira?

I just looked quickly at the tansy family, and found a possibility: tanecetum parthenium, feverfew. Perhaps the OP can take a look at it and see what they think.

Feverfew spreads by seed but not by running roots. It also has a very distinctive smell of chrysanthemums. If it has a running rootstock it isn't feverfew. Are the dead flower heads attached to the same plant? They are clearly daisies, like feverfew, but mine doesn't leave heads like those. Maybe it behaves differently in different climates.

I'll have to look closer at the roots but last years plants seem to have left a large root mass more than running roots. Looking up pictures of feverfew, that sure seems to be as close as anything I've seen. Thank you to all.
