Does canna virus "hang out" in the yard?
Comments (9)Carol, Kudos to MikeâÂÂs reply relative to virus surviving in the soil. Canna viruses (virons) reside within the confined cell wall of living cells. As he suggested there are other pathogens that may survive in the soil or within the rhizome that can carry over from one year to the next. I might point out that rust is a fungus that often creates debilitating effects on canna particularly in the warmer semi tropical areas and easily carries over in the cooler months. It is not a serious problem in the more northern latitudes. Prolonged freezing conditions will kill the rust fungi. Bacterial bud rot can be a serious and often life threating issue with some of our susceptible cultivars. You can usually cut one of the older stalks near the ground line and see the center of the stalk is dark brown or black. A rhizome with bacteria bud rot will usually show the same signs and contain a thick jelly like sap. Is the canna in the photograph one of the ones that died? It appears to be quite healthy at that time? Do you happen to know the name of this cultivar? I donâÂÂt think we can determine the cause of the cannas demise but assuming there is not a soil issue (donâÂÂt rule this out) I would not hesitate to try to grow other cannas in that location. Just donâÂÂt be careless, do a trial year to see what happens with only a very few. Kent...See MoreCanna virus
Comments (4)Bill, The general situation remains much the same. Most growers are now very aware of the problem and a few are making progress towards the elimination of contaminated planting stock. In some ways it is somewhat like trying to eliminate the common cold. There is no cure for a virused plant. At the present time the answer lies with trying to find clean plants for a planting stock foundation, tissue cultured explants that have been virus indexed or growing new cultivars from clean seed and virus indexing. All the above is both very time consuming and expensive. The chance of recontamination is always present. The consumer must be aware of the problem and assuming their plants are clean they need to become familiar with the virus symptoms and grow any new plants somewhat isolated from the clean stock. Choose your supplier carefully and expect to pay a premium for clean stock. It is necessary to destroy any virused plants found. Regards, Kent...See MoreCanna Virus on Tropicanna?
Comments (11)Last year, all the stock for sale was infected here in southern Ontario, Canada. I think I was just fed a line. I really think they don't care because they get their sales from their distributors. I just have that unsuspecting consumers are the real losers thinking that they have done something wrong. Lowes was selling cannas this year labelled as Tropicanna, but not with the official trademark of Tropicanna. Unfortunately, they were not Tropicanna. They actually look more like Australia, nice clean stock....See MoreVirus-free Canna Sources?
Comments (17)Thank you for the updates (I had to reset my password to be able to respond...couldn't remember the old one to save my life...it has been a while since I was last on here!). Sad to hear that Horn hasn't been able to clean up their stock. Well it's been two years since my first attempt at cannas (which was to overwinter a purchase of rhizomes that I never saw/enjoyed in bloom)...and I did end up losing all of them through the winter. Was going to take up the kind member on his offer to share some of his virus-free bulbs, but have not done it yet. The perennials in my yard "exploded" and took over the area that the cannas were gonna go in, and I'm still trying to free up some space. Maybe next year! Hope you guys and your plants are doing well this year with Corona and all. I have missed being on here, but had so much going on in the past two years that I just couldn't. Thank you to both of you for getting me to sign back in 😊😊...See MoreNicole_GA
