When do you trim back your fall bloomers to manage them?
Comments (6)I gave my plants their first haircut around June 1st or 2nd. I use the small hedge shears and they make short work of this task, it really doesn't take long at all. While I'm at it, I trim back any dying bulb foliage. Usually I trim only once in June, but will play it by ear. This year I trimmed more perennials than ever before - Asters, Boltonia, Phlox, Solidago, Helianthus, Heliopsis, Rudbeckia, Monarda, Eupatorium, Mums, etc. With some of them, I cut the whole plant back, with some (like Monarda didyma) I only trim about 1/2 the tallest stalks. This way, I hope to extend the bloom time - the stalks that weren't pruned bloom earlier, the ones that were bloom later....See Morewhen do you cut your canna back?
Comments (13)Thanks for the link, Alicia7b! My interest is still piqued by the newspaper idea. Since I have several cannas, I might leave one of each type outside this winter, protect as planned, dig up the others, and see what's happened to the 2 guinea pigs this coming spring. Might have something new to report to this forum! In storing my dahlia tubers (originally grown from seed), I've bound nothing beats peat moss. I washed mine well, made sure they were dry, buried them in peat moss in a 5-gal cat litter bucket with a plastic snap lid on top, and promptly forgot where I'd stored them. (in the coolest closet in the house) By the time I found them, they'd put out roots and shoots like crazy. Best dahlia bed I never had, this year. BTW, that Fiskars folding saw looks incredibly handy. I'm putting that on my Santa Claus list. Last year, he brought me my Felco pruners. cheers Janice...See MoreDo you divide your heuchera ?
Comments (17)I have divided mine a few times just because I am too scared to lose it. I had 4 that died on me or peter out on me not too long after I got them. After reading they are supposed to be split every 2-3 yrs I lost my others because the main root had too many babies on them to sustain the life of the whole plant. So when some of my favorites look like they have too many "babies" I split them. I now have 40-50 babies that I have no room for plus I never even wanted that many(that's with giving my brother 12 last year!) The good news is now I have some to fall back on if one of my others die! But in the future maybe I might let my beautiful Dolce Licorice get as big as it was last year!...See MoreWhen do you Cut Back your Shrubs/Bushes
Comments (1)I've learned that sometimes you can get away with breaking some of the rules of pruning, but if you really love the tree or shrub, you may not want to risk cutting it now. It just causes more stress for the plant....See Morewhitewatervol (Z 8a/7b Upstate SC)
