What would make your world a little better?
Comments (16)I'd like a little relief from doctors/hospitals hounding us about medical bills. My self-employed husband just underwent bypass surgery (SIX grafts) and a double aneurysm repair..saying all the time that we can't afford this..and yet it goes on and the doctors keep saying to come in for more tests..and the bills mount up and we can't pay them. No one seems to be listening. No insurance, of course..we are some of the working class who can't afford it. We are both receiving Social Security payments due to our age (he took early retirement due to other physical problems so no medicare) and I have a part-time job which gives me walking-around money for gasoline and the occasional purchase at the thrift store or consiginment shop. No, I'm not feeling sorry for myself, we are managing, and many others are worse off. I just wish for a respite from the daily arrival of bills we have no way to pay, and the insistence of doctors for tests they KNOW we can't pay for! Sorry for the vent..it just needed to come out and this was a convenient place to do it. I know many others are in much more dire straits than my husband and I..but thank your for listening and perhaps understanding....See MoreAlabama Gardening reference books?
Comments (30)Glad you liked it, idig! I get more enjoyment from a movie or book when I share it with somone else. Never visited the Royal Horticultural Society site before, but did today. As usual, the British are veddy dedicated to their passions. One being gardening. Some of our native plants like phlox were taken across the ocean and given the full treatment by these avid gardeners, and became truly magnificent. Of course, it is good to know the old native is still available right here at home still. Our countryside has a wealth of plants coveted or appreciated by the rest of the gardening world. We are lucky to live in a climate which permits such things to flourish. If we begin a new thread, what would it cover? Movies for sure, books on gardening in general? Let me know what ou think of the movie CROSS CREEK. I pick many movies because of the scenery or the house or garden. I was sorely disappointed in MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE because I expected to see more of the old house interior. Not to be. And then by the same author, NIGHTS IN RODANTHE had a real spooky looking house perched with its toes in the Atlantic, which didn't look real but maybe it was, but the closeup details were interesting. Like the old exterior shutter mechanisms, the old kitchen and the furnishings, which reminded me of old bay houses along Mobile Bay here. I'm into "comfortable casual shack" which is a few steps beyond "shabby chic" if you know what I mean....See MoreBook...The Timber Press Guide to Succulent Plants of the World
Comments (8)It was the Euphorbia trichaclenia. It was showing part of the root that it said was normally underground...which was kind of a big hunking ball. I couldn't see yours, but I don't think your pot was big enough to hold that kind of root. There was an interesting photo of a Jatropha multifida, a relative of Euphorbia, that had that Japanese maple look that made me think of your plant more closely. But your plant had a label of Euphorbia so that's out. Photos are like 95% of plants in habitate and I can't say that I recognized more than 5 of them! That's a newbie for you. Knowing the habitate helps me in knowing how to care for these things I seem to be killing off....See MoreWorld Book Night
Comments (10)OT, but Veer, I am on the board of my library and also volunteer once a week. Donated books, etc., really can be a problem. Our libraries are understaffed and it's all they can do to keep up with the day to day work, much less process donations. First they have to check to see if the book is needed or appropriate for the collection. If so it has to be assigned a Dewey decimal number, added to the online catalog and get barcoded as well as getting a plastic book jacket. It really is more work than it sounds like! We do put some books out for sale but Book Sale space is very limited, plus people paw through them and leave a mess. A pox on the people who dump boxes of old useless books on the doorsteps of libraries when they are closed. One time we had such a pile that we could not open the door. Old, moldy textbooks that were years old. What were they thinking?? Anyway, sorry to go OT. I am trying hard to think of how I could distribute books. It sounds like you get 20 copies of the same book. I must be missing something here....See Moreeld6161
