Are your ginger seeds still available? I have varigated ginger and an unknown ginger but have never found any seeds on them. I do have Dietes Moraea and Belamcanda Chinenis seeds that would grow well in your zone. Any interest? Chet

Hi Pattie, Since this is old post, don't know if you're still interested. But I had a problem with too many of these and most of my responses were about the rhizomes they produce and propogate with. I just checked and they CAN be propogated by seed (I don't know how, tho) but with the multitude of rhizomes that mine put off (my plants grew like bamboo and overran my entire garden), seems that is how everyone swaps them. That's how I saw them sold on the web. (Two rhizomes with one leaf each , one sprout each for $25 !!!) I had someone explain to me on the swap page how to go about preparing the rhizomes for shipping and it's simple, but won't go into that. If you find someone intersested, they can tell you. here2learn: It took me quite a few years of trial and error before I got this right. (1) Exposure: Full sun distresses this ginger. Full shade does not allow enough sunlight for optimum photosynthesis. Site hedychium in filtered shade. (2) Moisture: Conventional (potting) soil drains too fast, even with daily watering. Mine did not take off until I transplanted them to a non-draining bog planter. (3) Organic matter: This species is native to the fertile volcanic ash plains of south central Asia, not to Texas caliche. Be generous with top-dressings of compost. Once you think you've reached the saturation point, add another batch. Supplemental fertilizer is pretty much useless unless the above three conditions have been met. As a personal preference, I apply a slow-release organic granular between the soil and top-dressing. You can boost spring growth with a biweekly foliar feed of seaweed/fish/Hasto-Gro. As Omar pointed out, the heavenly fragrance is well worth the effort. In addition, I love watching the anoles perch on its broad leaves while they wait for dinner.
