Hydrangea Limelight vs Oakleaf Snowqueen Hedge
Comments (2)Well they have very different requirements. The oakleafs going to like more shade and not tolerate full sun very well. The Limelight should do fine in full sun. They're also have two totally different growth habits, the oakleaf can be sort of wide and spreading, but the Limelight is going to be more upright like a crepe myrtle tree (you could always plant something under/around it. Keep in mind too as far as a hedge both of these are deciduous, and you'll have to leave the winter branches up to keep the buds in place for the next year (Does Limelight bloom on new wood?) But that's a long distance for any one hedge, maybe breaking it up in groupings back and forth. Maybe throwing in some other hydrangeas in for color....See MoreLimelight Hydrangea hedge Spacing
Comments (4)I planted 75 Limelights last year and the spacing was exactly 4' from center to center. this year, their edges are already overlapping. I expect that by next year, the outermost 30% of branches will have knitted together. I would go with 4', no closer. 5' would be OK too for economical reasons, but 6' may be too far if you want the hedge to connect within 2-3 years. In time, though, it should still connect, since Limelight is supposed to get to 8' wide, though maybe only in the outermost branches, and not densely, uniformly intergrowing....See MoreHyd. pan.- early bloomers-Preacox, White Moth, Quickfire-Others??
Comments (24)Your Kyushu is a nice looking specimen. Doesn't exactly look like the one I got from Home Depot. That's very encouraging. Did you do anything to get it to be as compact as it is? I mean, like pruning it or training it? I do think I like the Limelight flower better, though. Especially that lime green color. I saw somewhere recently that Dirr was discussing the future of hydrangeas and, of course, he's very enthusiastic. The future he saw was one in which we get more Endless Summer types that bloom for us Northerners and stronger stemmed plants that will replace the Annabelles and the like. On a quest for the perfect Hydrangea.... Thank you for your thoughts. I really appreciate them and they help me a lot. Back to Thread Swerve.... The Oakleaf 'Snowflake' is a most interesting flower. You can see from the pictures that it has this sorta psychedelic coloring that almost gets me dizzy looking at it. I looked at the flowers more closely yesterday and what is happening is that the little sepals (or whatever they are) just keep on coming out of the middle of the last ones. Then, as so many hydrangeas do, the older ones will start to fade to a pink while the newer ones keep coming on as white. And because these flowers just keep on coming, it has a very long blooming season. In my zone, we don't get a lot of blooms from Oakleafs because they bloom from a terminal bud from last year and.... well, that's where I came in...I'm starting to wonder about how I can overwinter these and get them to bloom for me.... And if we get to the perfect Hydrangea, I hope it looks a little like Hay....See MoreLimelight hedge for side yard (8ft wide) - Zone 5 (Chicago)
Comments (4)Paniculatas are very reliable bloomer and many get larger in time so it may get a good plant that -depending on how it likes the site- may grow too big for it. Can you elaborate on the plant not getting morning sun? Is it just because the fence shades over that section? Hydrangeas are deciduous so you will see the fence during the winter time. I assume this is ok? Limelight is a favorite of people trying to do hedges. You can ck out posts about it by doing a forum search for 'limelight hedge'...See Moredragonfly1041
